I was quoted $900 for gears installed. Well not really I was quoted $500 for gears installed and $400 for a complete custom tune.

Now my thing is should I have the gears done and buy a programmer or should I go with the custom tune? With the programmer I will have something tangible in my hands for around $400 . If I go with the custom tune It will be done by the "2005 NMCA Street Race World Champion (Mike Dez)" so I know he knows what he is doing the only problem is the car is basically stock except for BBK Lt's, BBK High flow cats, Magnapacks, BBK 75mm TB and plenum and soon to be 390 gears so either way the chip needs to be flashed to fix the speedo.

Should I go with the custom tune or should I just buy a programmer.

Theres a third option which is speed cal dip switch thing for around $100 but, it doesnt tune. I think the other two options are better choice's unlless you can convince me otherwise.

Buy a programmer because if you're like me you plan to be modding forever and ever and you're gonna need that thing to get tunes later on.. unless you wanna pay for the custom tune everytime that's your choice i would definately do something close to instlaling the gears to fix the speedo so you don't put a bunch of ghost miles on your car

I would go with the tuner so you can upgrade. There's also many more benefits that come w/ the tuner such as data logging and reading your CEL.

BEEP BEEP BEEP ... NEWS FLASH this just in...

Just got off the phone with Mike Dez. I talked with him at length and explained to him the tangible effect weighs heavily on my mind. Since he is a SCT dealer Ive decided to get the custom tune and SCT Xcal2 for another $100 although its more then I originally wanted to spend I think Its my best alternative and the best deal yet.
Thx for all that posted originally your responsible for helping me get what I really wanted.

O yea I get some pulls with this deal so although my car isnt heavily modded Ill let you know what she is putting down.

Anyone care to guess at the #'s now see how close you come
Mac Cold Air, BBK LT's, BBK HighFlow Cats, MagnaFlow Magnapacks, BBK 75MM TB+P, Custom tune and 390's

I would buy a used programer. you just don't have mods to warant and extra money for dyno time or custom tune IMO. the only reason you might need a tune is if the mac CAI has you rich.
I got a used diablo for $250.

I won't not do custom tune until heads/cams/boost have been added.

If I had paid that much for gears and tune i would be very dissapointed.

I paid about the same for gears, axles, girdle, diff, and programer.

Mustangtuning.com has a sale on gears, oil and an SCT or Diablo Tuner. $600. Then a gear install will cost $200. You can then tune it yourself and save $100.

I had my 4.10s for my 98GT put in at a ford dealership. One of the techs did it as an after hours night job for me, for $200 labor. I gave him the gears and the oil, which was $150 for the gears and $80 for oil. Grand total of about $430. out the door. Although i didn't have the speedo tuned......

Ok, if you can get a dyno tune and the Xcal2 for only an extra hundred bucks, you can't go wrong there. Look at it this way, you're paying the 400 bucks for the Xcal, and only paying the extra hundred for a custom dyno tune. Not a bad deal at all, and even if you have to tune it again after some other mods (which in your case would only be cams or a big change like a SC), then I dno't think its a waste of a 100 bucks.

I wouldn't pay $1,000 for gears and a custom tune.

Gears are around $200.
Maybe $150 to install.
An Xcal with vendor support is $380.

$270 for a custom tune on a mildly modified car seems high. Even if that's dyno tuning. It's your money but I would take it in steps. Get the Xcal2 first, then the gears, then decide if you want the custom tuning.

Wow...that is way too much! I'm having my gears done for $400 (parts and labor). Ouch on the $900. hell, if you want a custom dyno tune go for it. Especially if your car is pinging. That's never good.

I'm going to drive with a bad speedo until I get my blower installed.
