Most of mileage is in how you drive...
I have a v8 dakota clubcab 4wd that I get 15.5 mpg in, but I could do much better if I stayed out of the gas some more...
I like the dakota because it is beefy enough to work like a fullsize when needed but still gets better mileage, is peppier, and smaller than a fullsize.
Just another non-ford opinion though.... I think if I had to look for a sub $6k truck I would look for a 00-01 dakota with the 4.7l v8...
