Help me settle this bet with Restomods

Well I thought about it... and if someone offered me 15k, I'd say no.

Simply because I have almost 12k into it (purchase price included). So I look at it as a replacement cost. How easy would it be to replace what I have? I think it might be tougher than most people think. And I'd only be a couple of grand off than if I'd have just kept what I got.

Plus, I KNOW this car very well. It's never been wrecked or rusted. How do I know what I'm replacing it with has that type of history? And how much do I price out my time and sweat putting it together? No, it's not a Shelby... heck it's not even a GT. But it's mine. Paid in full. Besides, if it were too much of a collectible, I may not enjoy it as much. I don't see too many old Mustangs autocrossing.

So yes, to most people, maybe all people, 20k is overpriced. But not to me.

That's why I say "never" to selling it.

For sentimental reasons, I would not sell my car at any price that anyone in their right mind would offer. My car is only worth a few grand but I would have no problem turning down 10 grand and still feel good about it.

Is it just me or have fastback prices gotten pretty stupid lately? I mean don't get me wrong, I love fastbacks, and I'm glad I have mine already, but I feel sorry for the guys who want one and only have $10,000 or so for the whole project, and want a fastback. A local shop recently built a '68 for a customer's 18 year old son as a high school grad present. It was a neat car, 347 small block, tremec, willwoods, all leather interior, Mustang 2 front end, ect., and it cost the guy $125,000! Did I miss something? When did any early Mustang get to worth that much? Maybe I'll sell mine when it's done and get that Ferrari I always wanted...

For starters, this thread is better suited for Chat.

Now that I've spoken my peace, no your car isn't going to fetch anywhere near the money you put into it. Kingsford is a very similar example to what you're trying to build.

Considering I have no intention of ever selling the car, it doesn't matter how much I put into it, but I do know in the back of my head that I'd never recoupe the money were I to try and sell it.

Now, if the car were a fastback.... you would have a much better chance of finding the right buyer. All you gotta do with those things is put two white strips on it and say its a Shelby. Somebody on E-bay will pay $$$

Well, the whole suject is pretty depressing

I ha ve around 20k euros (parts cost here 1,4 times$) invested in my notchback, and if I would EVER sell it, 10k would be a good deal....

But, if we think it as a hobby, 7 years for a 20 k euros... thats cheap...

What is worth more than to say that I BUILD THIS?

I just heard from a friend that his collague had bought a -57 4d chevy, driveable with a bottle of whisky in Brasil.. And thats the place where I´m going for a summer... So why I´m throwing all my money to my stang.. not for profit, that I can say..

Exactly how I feel too. Plus, I see my car hobby as an opportunity to learn and grow. Wiring, welding, finding parts cheap, learning what will and won't work... It's a blast! You can't put a price on that.

It's also much better for you physically than spending your money at the movies or eating out all the time.

worth?

Sory, but appaisers are going to give you those outageous values basically for insurance purposes and to make you feel good. Your car is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it or the amount of insurance you can collect....thus the appraisal, but you would get more money totalling the car than you could ever get selling it.

Perfect example.....I have a friend that had an awesome 70 Mach 1 that was totally built and had the best of everything. It had a 500 CI big block every suspension mod, currie full tilt rearend, immaculate paint, perfect interior.....blah blah blah. This car ran 10s on the street and appraised for 50K in 1999 or there abouts. A year and a half ago he had to sell it and could not get rid of it because noone wanted to pay decent money for it, he had even done many improvements since the appraisal....he sold it for $12.5K because he had to have the money.

Route66 Said it right...

I wasn't posting a for sale sign and I never would. What is not represented is the time in which we all put forth to complete our cars, not just the money. The money in is what it is worth. What you can sell it for may be a bit lower, unless you're at a Barrett Jackson auction of course :)

money pits

I saw a 1969 Mach I on collectorcartrader.com that was in Michigan. It had a fresh Dart 429 BB in it, racing suspension, wheels, custom interior, etc. The engine had been built by a specialty shop that builds race cars. the ad said that he had over $50 large invested in it. He was asking $35k. I bet he took much less than that.
