hey guys. i just got a 86 gt that is stock except the cold air and the e7 heads. it is speed density and still has the stock exaust headers and pipes. so i have 2 questions. one is specific and the other is advice.

1. how big of a cam can i run on a speed density car?

2. what bolt ons can i get to really get some performance without removing the heads or tearing into the engine. i want it to be reliable but still give the imports the spanking they deserve

no idea on the cam. Here is a list of basic's:

1) underdrives $80 5hp
2) 12-14* timing FREE 3-5hp
3) headers $175 10hp
4) Magnaflow or flows $200 10hp
5) Good tune up (plugs/wires/cap/rotor/fuel filter) $150 ??hp (depends on current condition)
6) K&n filter $40 1-5hp

sorry I dont have more not a SD guy...

Speed density runs great with a stock cam. I got my old police coupe well into the 12's (speed density) with $1400 (plus wheels). I had long tubes, H pipe, Flowmasters, a manual rack, GT40 intake, 3.73's, 65mm throttle body, roller rockers, race pulley, and an Eibach launch kit. All that stuff can be found on ebay cheap. It doesn't take much. Crower makes a good SD cam if you really have to have one- but you don't need it.

First thing to do GEARS...Then go on to other mods. When I first bought my '86 I pulled the silencer then got a 2.5" o/r h-pipe and Flowmaster cat-back. Then did other minor things. The exhaust didn't seem to make that much of a difference but then again you got the better E7 heads on there. I'm gettin some 3.73's in hopefully very soon.

Don't bother with the cam, with speed density or otherwise, its a good cam stock (unless you are doing some heads, which willlscrew you up with speed density). do full length headers x or h pipe and catback, 3.73's with a manual, 4.10's with auto, an aluminum driveshaft is always nice, shortened belt, a/c delete if you have and if it doesn't work, bypass the smog pump, remove it, plug the vac lines, and plug the thing to the back of the heads. good filter, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, good oil with a quart of lucas every 5 oil changes, and possibly an electric fan or fan/rad combo. this list should keep you busy. also, do subframe connectors asap, as you will need them if you race or beat on the car at all. a short throw shifter is good also as a starting mod. good luck!

Gears and an intake for power, subframes and good tires for traction. Heads/intakes are not a problem for SD, just be careful about your choice of camns if you change it. Look at my sig for P heads, stock cam results - and those are first dyno after assembly - no tuning.
