Help me with my buddies 04 Mach 1

Hey guys, first time to post in the 4.6 forum. I own a 64.5 myself but my friend has a 04' Mach 1 that he's looking to hop up. I am a pretty good mechanic (slightly better than average I would geuss). I know how engines operate and how to make more power, but I am in the fog when it comes to newer computer controlled cars. Anyways, my friend is looking to spend $200-$300. Firs things that come to my mind are headders, throttle body, a chip? You guys have anny suggestions? he has already done his exaust work (past headders) but other than that and a ram clutch, the car is stock.

Your best bet with headers is gonna be mid-lengths or Long Tubes and those cost around $700. The stock TB is twin 57mm, don't think you need to mess with those at all. A good butt kicker would be 4.10's if he wants an instant jolt for $200.

you wont get to much done with $200-300, but you can get some stuff done

headers are gonna be about $500+
you could pick up a k&n fipk for under $200
a throttle body and maf kit should be around his price range too.
you could get a tuner for about $300 too.

these newer engines are expensive arent they

Gears are still gonna end up costing him $400-$500 by the time they're installed and gets a speedcal. ocbaud is right. There's not a lot of things you can do to these newer ones for $200-$300. It stinks for poor folks like me.

Keep the Mach stock to maximize its resale value. If you must mod it here is a list of my recommended mods starting with the most recommended ending with least recommended.

-handheld engine computer (Predator or SCT)
-gears
-some exhaust mods

Other than the above, keep the Mach STOCK!

Thanks guys, I agree $300 dollars is a small budget but he wants to spend some money and thats all he has (he is not real tech-savvy, I had to put his brake pads on for him) I mentioned to him about the gears but its kinda like talking to a brick wall when explianing how/what they do. Last night he let me open her up on a country road... I think lower gears is all he's gonna need, the car is pretty dern fast.

If he got some gears would the computer have to be recalibrated/tuned? or just the spedo gear? I am a fairly skilled and am mechanicly minded and I have a really nice shop, can a gear swap be done by an amature? I'm geussing it'll be about a weekend project.

You will need to recalibrate the speedometer using a flash tuner or a SpeedCal device.

You can do a gear swap yourself if you have, at a minimum, a hydraulic press, a very large torque wrench, a very accurate inch-pound torque wrench, a very accurate dial gauge micrometer, and a very stout immovable surface to hold the carrier assembly while you are using the very large torque wrench.

If looking for a relatively cheap, effective mod, go with a short-throw shifter.
