Hey, Im new to the fox mustang world. I bought an 84 GT with lots of problems. I have rebuilt the engine, frame, exhaust, and I am now tackling the interior. Problem is that my dash is cracked in like 10-12 places. I need a new dash or someone to repair mine. SUGGESTIONS? Anybody have one they want to part with?

50resto.com has just about any replacement part you could imagine. I'd check there and see if they have a new dash pad for your year. If you are looking for the lower half of the dash and not just the top, I'd try ebay or the junkyards. Nobody else will have it probably.

You should be able to get that year dash from a salvage yard easily. It may be easier to just buy an entire parts car.

They can be brittle, so get the newest you can, and handle carefully.

dash or dash pad?

dash pads are repro'd, although not top quality, dashes are not.

as mentioned, they are fairly common in the j/y's

go to the forums at foureyedpride.com, maybe you'll find one there.

be careful, if you get a replacement dash that's too early, it'll have the earlier radio opening for the knob type stereos, then you have to start cutting it to get a radio in.

For the dashpad, the problem with the repros (as mentioned previously) is the quality, but also the correctness. There are only 2 companies that make the repros. One offers several different colors, the other, only black. The "black only" model is more "correct" insofar as contour, grain and speaker holes is concerned, but suffers from the same problems as the other "optional colors" model regarding quality. I know because I bought both, tried both, and sent both back. The speaker grille area is the worst part on both of them. They "burn" the holes for the speaker grilles through the dashpad and then they're hard, deformed and brittle. In fact, one of the two came with cracks already in it from the brittleness of the grille area plastic! Very disappointing. Anyway, what I decided to do was simply "cap" the dashpad with a hard shell that's very durable, and for the $150.00 dollar difference in price, certainly acceptable relative to the crappy soft ones. I keep my eye on the J/Y's and ebay in the interim.

Welcome to Stangnet.

Please refrain from posting want or sale ads within the forum of ANY kind.

I'll let the thread stand due to the technical nature of many of the responses but just be careful.

Take a look at the forum announcements and stickies when you get the chance.

Enjoy!

THE DASH PAD USED IN THE FIRST GEN FOX MUSTANGS WAS ALSO USED IN THE MERCURY ZEPHYR AND THE FORD FAIRMONT...PLENTYFULL AT JUNKYARDS AND SINCE THEY ARE NOT MUSTANGS, PARTS CAN USUALLY BE HAD FOR LESS. IHAVE A 79 FAIRMONT DASHPAD IN MY 86 GT AND IT FITS PERFECT...AND NOT A SINGLE CRACK...THE SPEAKER GRILLES ARE STILL INTACT!

What part is cracked, just the "pad" on top or the whole dash has cracks in it? If just the pad, there's a few companies selling repro dash pads. If you need the whole thing i'd do as mentioned and hit a junkyard and find a nice one, and then you'll still need a new dash pad (finding an original without cracks is nearly impossible, especially if it's already in a junkyard).

Those cars just about all disappeared almost like they never existed around here. I very rarely see one anymore.
