Help Needed: Changing Automatic Shifter Knob

I, like many others, do not particularly like the stock shifter knob that is on my 1996 Mustang GT Convertible (automatic transmission). I want something else, plain and simple. In particular, I'm looking for some sort of black leather shifter.

However, I'm not sure if I would be able to switch to the ones that I want. Here are a few samples of some shift knobs that I would like:

They are both listed as automatic shifters... which has been hard to find, as most of the shifters that I have seen that match what I'm looking for are for manual transmissions.

My question is... are either one of those compatible/would they be able to be installed on my car easily? And how would you go about doing that?

The items appear to have been removed. As long as they have the shift button somewhere on them then Im sure it could work.

I have this knob on my auto and I love it

They also have a brushed aluminum version

Go to the UPR site and look under Drivetrain and then find the Mustang Billet Automatic Shift Knobs. I have the one shown in the main picture (T-handle with OD switch under it). Mine was made by MGW and, perhaps, UPR has MGW make the T-handle for them (I don't know). High quality and much nicer feel (a bit warm in the summer) than the stock rubber handle.

I have gone to UPR, I didn't really like any of the handles they had there... I'm not really looking for another T-handle either.

Here's what I'm looking at now:


It is for an automatic and has a button on it, so now I'm just wondering if I'll be able to use it. If anyone knows, that would be great.

Got pics? I imagine that knob would look good on an auto, and you could put a leather boot on it because it shows the shift pattern on the shift knob itself. I dont see a "thumb button" though to prevent you from accidentally bumping the trans into reverse etc. Is there one? What did you do with the overdrive button?

This is an interesting thread. I'd like to do something about the ugly shifter, but want to keep the overdrive button working.

I have the UPR shifter kit with the optional O/D button mounted below the shifter knob. it works great and the top of the shifter knob is the shifter lock or button. You have to press down with your thumb to shift. The only pain in mounting is getting to the O/D wire under the console. But if you remove the coin holder( it pops out) the connector is right there. The wire runs from the button through the shifters sleeve into the console and connects right under the coin holder.

That's good info about the plug hiding under the coin holder. Thanks for posting it. (When I put the stalk-mounted OD switch in, I spliced the skinny little wires together because I didn't want to remove the console to find the little plug.)

If you can, post up a pic for the OP so he can see your setup, please.
