HELP!! Second opinion on Gears needed!

I installed 3.73s about 2 months ago and just recently they began to whine very loud after running fine for 2 months. I knew something had gone wrong and immidiately took it in to a shop to have it looked at. They told me the worst news possible, the pinion bolt had loosened up considerably and the pinion seal had fallen off! Ouch :notnice: Anyway, they tightened it back up and now it seems to run fine again, however they told me I need to have the ring and pinion replaced soon since it wore on the wrong part of the gear teeth during the two days it was whining. My question is do you think this is necissary?? Could 2 days have done that much damage? It's gonna cost about $600 to buy new gears and have them installed so I'm really trying to avoid this. Thanks for the help in advance!

I had that happen to my stock gears and because so much metal circulated through I had to replace everthing except the rear end housing! At least I was able to put 3.73's in and make the car better in the process, and yeah it is definitely not cheap! :(

Well, did they install a new pinion nut when they "fixed" it for you or at least red loctite? I guess they assumed you crushed the collar correctly and they just snugged up against that (?).

Anyway, if it is quite now, I would just monitor the situation. I have serviced gears that made noise due to improper installation and after correctly installing them, they were quite with no complaints even several years later. These cars were driven short distances with the noisy set up (about 10-30 miles) - about like yours I am guessing.

Really depends on how much you drove it in those two days, but i know for sure that it doesn't take much to damage them. Good luck man, tough break.

Wear

A little wear on the wrong area sounds funny. You are lucky, what can happen is the teeth brake off.
When they push the pinion back on the ring it will be using the good areas of the ring and pinion, not the so called worn areas.

Sounds like it will be ok. However, if you had someone do the install on the 3.73s they need to get you an new set of gears and re-install them. If you paid someone they need to cover their mistake.
