I just got my new (rebuilt) 306 going and i hear a squeaking noise which sounds like it is right under the intake. I took off the drive belt, valve covers and ran the motor, squeak is still there. pushing in the clutch does not help either. If I stand directly over the front of car i hear the squeak, kinda in the lifter valley. I cannot pin point this noise. I am wondering if possible that the push rods are rubbing the guide plates?? maybe i should back the throw out bearing all the way off the clutch?? Any input appreicated.. Thanks!!

Yes,
any pressure on the clutch does not make a difference. It almost sounds like a bad alt. or water pump, but i tried no belt.. Can a throw out bearing make noise all the time pressed or not????

I figured it out.. I remover the lower intake and found when i turn the motor over i hear the squeak. It was the lifter rubbing on the u shaped hold down.. I am going to buy new lifters as the ones i had were used. I also noticed that the plunger part some of the lifters was compressed by the pushrod . Is this normal? or are some of the lifters collapsed? thanks for the input...
