Hey guys, Im new to this forum. Im only 18, still in school and have little money. I also have little time to work on my baby since im workin and in school. I have a '66 289 K-code hi-po 'stang and Im lookin for help. My car isnt soundin the way I want it to. I want it to sound vicious, I want it to roar. Any tips on what I need to do to get there. I have a small idea of what to do, but I'll take the advise from people with experience under their belt. Help me out. Thanks guys!

Hmmm, the first place we all start. Well you have a number of places to start and even more ways to finish.
To get instant gratification you can have some 40 series flowmasters welded in. Then, you can get some headers bolted on. With headers you have a lot of choices. The next thing to do is enlarge the pipes going to the back and include either an H pipe of X pipe depending on the sound you want. Lastly, decide if you want the pipes to go all the way back or if you want to dump them after the Flowmasters. If you dump them it will be a lot louder but running them all the way back will sound a little more finished and less drag car'ish. Decide on the dumps when you have the Flowmasters welded in so the muffler shop can do the job while they're welding in the mufflers.

Oh, and you don't have to get Flowmasters. There are tons of mufflers out there and they all have different sounds so look around before you decide. I only recommend Flows because they have the typical muscle car deep throaty sound.

Good luck!

Might I recommend a set of headers, I prefer hookers, a Dr. Gas X-pipe, and spintech prostreets. 2 1/2 inches would be optimum size for that engine. It will make your engine really roar, and add a fair bit of power you will feel a good difference.

Besides exhaust the other thing that you can do to change the sound is get a new cam.
lots of guys I know locally have Flows like me- but they dont sound the same because they have very mild cams.

If it is a true HIPO then it will have the improved manifolds and because he is on a budget there is no need to change them. As mentioned above the muffler will have a big effect on the way the car sounds o long with larger tips. And will give you the most bang for the buck. But a full exhaust with header and a new cam will get you even more but at a much greater cost. Just my .02 cents.

You have a very desireable car the way it is. I would suggest you accept it for what it is and save your $$ for the day when you need to fix something. It WILL happen. ... On the other hand, you're only young once.... I just don't remember what that's all about, so you may choose to ignore me.

Don't do anything to this car that you can't undo. Save any part you take off because a numbers matching K code is worth big bucks.

Ditto, or sell it and buy a cheaper, less of a collecter's car. An orignal K code car like that isn't something you'd want to give a teenager to start modifying.

That is a good point I would actually swap the engine or something, those K codes are worth a lot of money, if it is numbers matching I would just leave it in the car.

I have a friend with a 67 Shelby GT350. He races the car but not with the original engine. He took the original out and replaced it with another because he didn't want to take the chance of messing the original up.
