I am starting a project stang this spring. I found an 89' notch that was a special service vehicle from florida. The owner before me decided to take out the fuel injection and change to carb, b/c florida has no emissions. I was originally going to convert back to fuel injected but changed my mind (kit for sale by the way, lol.) I am going to do my best to try and pass emissions with a carb, lol. I have smog pump and all plumbing, H-pipe with cats too. I know it won't pas visual inspection but the way CT does emissions now I think i can get around it. Instead of main emissions stations around the state, we have hundreds set up in some mom and pop garages and gas stations now. I know a guy that owns one and will pass me visually but pretty much his hands are tied when it comes to the sniffer. There is really no way to fake that since i believe the information is directly loaded into a computer data base run by the state. That being said. I would like to put together a nice little street package for my ride that will hold me over until i can build a serious engine. I wanted to do some AFR 165's or 185's emissions legal, or trickflows. Some sort of performance intake that has an egr for emissions, bc i think i am gonna need that. And a decent Barry Grant carb, something in the 575 - 625 cfm range. The bottom end will be a stock rebuild with forged pistons, and I have a b-cam that i wanted to use b/c i have it, or maybe something else if no one thinks that will work. Basically I am shooting for something that will make over 300 rwhp, more like 315 - 320 would be even better, but i am not sure if that is too much of a lofty expectaion for this setup. Give me some input guys!!!

Thanks,
Josh

You won't get 300 rwhp with a b-cam and anything under a 650. I would go the TFS TW's. TW's flow a little better than the AFR 165's. The 185's are killer, but not for your combo. A little too much top end.

I would get atleast a 500 lift cam with about 286 duration and a 110 LC.

You could go all out and get the TFS TW's, TFS #2 cam(same grind as the crane 2432)TFS Street Intake (if they make one for carb) and a good 650-700 carb. I put down 294 rwhp with the crane cam, TFS TW's, and a TFS Track Heat intake. I also had a 70 mm TB and 70 mm MAFS with 1.6rr's and Longtubes.

That is my opinion, I am sure you will get many others, but you can't go wrong with all one brand that was made to work together.

Unfortunately TF does not offer a carb intake. I would think of getting an edelbrock though. Those are pretty good and you can get a matched cam although it is a bit steep to get a cam that way. To aid in passing emmisions I would also suggest getting an MSD 6A or AL. It will really help your engine burn more efficiently. My friend's car failed and he purchased one and put it on. It passed with flying colors when he went back. I was sold. Good luck on your buildup. The stage 2 cam would be awsome but depending on how lax your state emmisions is(i live in CA) you might not pass. Just a thought

Yes I actually already have the MSD ignition. I guess that I probably could go with a little more aggressive cam, and a bigger carb. I already have the stock type 4 barrel with is a very mild carb to pass emissions, so i could always swap my other one on and off every 2 years, its not that much trouble. I would love to find someone in here with a carb'd setup that is not anything too wild that makes over 300 to the wheels. Any other input will be great. I think even if i don'y hit my 300rwhp nnumber it'll still go pretty good. It has no A/C, no backseat, no sound deadening, no heavy efi intake, 3.73's and its a Notch, which to my understanding is somewhat lighter than the HB, i think by over 100lbs, correct me if i am wrong though. Any other input would be great. thanks

There is a way around it, depending on if they have cameras in the shop. If you know the guy, just have him pull another V8 car or truck and have that car do the sniff test. Or just find a way to get extra fresh air in your exhaust.(guy passed cali emissions by plumbing his blower straight into his exhaust)
