I just bought a set of 99 heads from a guy in the classifieds here. When I received the heads yesterday, they were in the same box... A little bit of surface damage, but not bad enough to prevent an install. Then I notice the R/H head has a tag on the cam sprocket that reads "Cam not Torqued" so I start wondering why. I looked at the number 6 cam cap, and it's cracked.
I have also purchased a set of SHM 2730's to put in the heads before I do the swap.
How can I fix the cracked cam cap. Everything else looks to be in good working order. Does anybody know a shop in NC that can install the cams and replace the cam cap?
Thanks in advance,

Tim

you need a new cap, talk to ford, or I have a set of caps and PI cams from my 99 heads left over that I can get ya cheap. I would imagine they are a pretty penny from ford not sure though. Just let me know what u need, I have the complete heads just sitting here and I am not going to use them except for paper weights

If you replace that cap you will have to have the head line honed.

Jr2fast--Thanks alot. I may be hitting you up that, depnding on what a local shop says about putting these cams in for me.

billyfe390--I'm not too familiar with head work, but I thought it only needed to be honed if the end play was too tight.

The cam caps are individual to each other like main caps in the engine. When they are made the caps are torqued onto the head and then they are bored/honed out to the final specification. So if you put a different cap on it will be a different size and could cause problems. When you line hone an engine you get a main bearing/cam journal cap and make it a smaller diameter by milling it down then you hone out the bore to the specs you need.

billyfe390--Thanks for that info. I'm learning as I go. I used to do front end work for a Ford dealership before I joined the Army, but I never got into engine work.
