help with rear axle....

help with rear axle....

ok so i have a 2003 ford mustang v6 engine......it was hit by an excursion of all cars....and now the rear driver side is making some noise from the axle....some one told me it could be the bearings or the axle could be just a little tweked and need replacing....either way....i dont know how to do either of these things...if anyone could help me out with a step by step on changing out the rear axle or changing the bearings ....or could recomend a good website with some kind of walk through on the process i would appreciate it....THANKS A LOT TO ANYONE WHO REPLIES!!!!!!!

What I was asking was, has the car been hit in the rear on the driver side or is this something that isn't collision related. The best way to go would be to get a Ford shop manual, or at least a Haynes which would outline the procedure. If it's axle replacement, you will need to disassemble alot of things.
Remove the rotor and caliper from the driver side
Remove the rear axle cover bolts and remove the cover
Remove the pinion lock bolt
Slide the pinion shaft out
Push in on the axle and remove any c-clips
Pull the axle out, just don't be careless doing it
It goes back together by reversing the steps
It probably wouldn't hurt to replace the axle seal as well since you will have gone this far. Pull it out and use a piece of wood or an oversized socket and tap it in. Hope all this helps you.

And of course, be sure to add the correct amount of fluid and some friction modifier when you put it all back together. To remove the axle bearing, find something to pull it out with and use a socket or wood to drive it back into position. Just make sure it is in all the way.

thanks

it was hit on the driver side rear panel........the noise started a couple months after the accident...so i dont know if it caused it or not.....but regardless thanks for all your info...i will go pick up a book today...hopefully that helps me out.
