I'm redoing a 65 Fastback which includes a V8 conversion. Just bought a bunch of parts from a local guy which included a Ford rear end. . He's not sure what the rear end is from nor if it's an 8" or a 9". Can anyone give me some tips on how to identify?

There is a tag on the third member the tag reads

WDW-K
2 79 7GA 833

Thanks for your help.

It's a 2.79 with open (peg leg) diff.
Likely an 8" rear, as the 2.75 is a 9" gear while 2.79 was 8" only IIRC.

Take a pic and I will tell you for sure 8" or 9".

If you can't take a pic:

Try to put a socket on all of the nuts/studs that secure the chunk.
If the socket can fit on all of them, it's an 8". If some will not accept a socket, it's a 9".
Then measure from center to center of each spring pad.
Record the measurement.
Then measure from where one brake backing plate mounts to the housing, straight across to the other.
Record that measure.

Post them here and we can marry up the rear to what cars it fits or came from.

Edit:
My guess, it's a Maverick 8" rear. 2nd guess would be a Granada.

Either of which would bolt right into a 65-66 Stang.
But is still only an 8" rear.

2.79 gears-----8"rear. These came in 67-79 cars. All I think were leaf spring rears, but have differing overall widths. Spring perches will be the same distance apart for all

Ok,

It's definately the 8" b/c the socket will fit all nuts around the third member.

Inside of flange to inside of flange (not brake drum to drum but the actual flange on the end of the axle tube) measures 53 3/4

Spring perches are 44 1/4 O/C

The axle tubes do not taper as they did with the 65/66 Mustang 8" rears. They are dead straight right to the end. My understanding is that may be an issue for installation on a 65/66.

Any help you can give is MUCH appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

The second set of numbers on the bottom row indicate the assebly date. "7GA" would be (7) 1967, (G) July, (A) first week of month. So, it's a 1967 8" rearend.

I second that...
I didn't know the numbers, but the measurement is right for 67-70 Mustang.

This will bolt into your Stang, but will be a little wider than stock.
You can compensate by getting rims in the back with a little more backspace.
About .5" to .75" more BS I believe is what is called for.
Stock rims will work too, they just fit a little more snug.

Thanks for the help guys.

Not sure whether to use this one or pursue an actual 65/66 rear. I'm early in the project so I have some time. The motor I purchased is a 67 289 so the date would correspond. The rear I do end up using will be rebuilt anyway as I'm going to run 3:55 posi.
