Help With Seat Swap in 65/66!

Hi there--

I've finally decided to swap out the seats in my 66 for something that doesn't kill my back. (Hear me kids: Be nice to your back. I wasn't and I'm paying for it now.) What I envision--and we all know that what you envision never actually turns out--is some nice, supportive seats that I can pull out and drop in my original 66's for shows.

I have several questions.

A) Do I need a new set of mustang tracks for the replacement seats? I want to keep the tracks on my seats so all I have to do is drop them in.

B) What kind of seats fit? I need something with good lumbar support, but nothing crazy like those racing seats. This is a daily driver. What are you running and how did you make them fit?

C) What can I expect to pay for some used seats? I'll get them redone in vinyl to match the interior. That isn't a problem.

D) Am I out of my mind?

There are tons of seats that can be used just sitting in junk yards all around the country. I suggest that you go to some junk/salvage yards and look through as many cars as you can, including imports as they often have very nice seats. Sit in the cars and find a set you like. Then the only thing you need to do is adapt them to fit. I have done this using original seat tracks and will a little work most seats can be made to fit. Too bad you aren't in Houston as I would tell you to bring the seat you found and I would help you get a track on it and test it on my project car as I have a box of seat tracks in the garage and all the tools for fabricating.

Ron--I seem to remember someone saying that a year of GT seats (88? 89?) would drop right in. Ideas?

If I was closer to Houston, I'd pick up a 12 pack and take you up on your offer!

I have 93 Mustang GT seats in my Mustang but they are not a direct drop in. It is true that with a little massaging of the holes the seat tracks will bolt right on but the problem is that the seat will be too close to the wheel and is only acceptable fro extremely short people. I made special offset brackets to move the seats to mimic the location of the stock seats. If you find a set of GT seats (any year that you like should fit) let me know and I will take some measurements and pictures of the brackets so you can replicate them easily.

ive got 92 stang seats im my vert i bolted them to the front holes on the seats with the factory 67 tracks and just drilled holes to fit the rear holes in the tracks seem to be fine with me and im 6' tall

I knew someone would say that but I have done a lot of measuring and if you just bolt in the later model seats after putting the early model tracks on then they will not go back as far as the original. You also have to allow for the difference in padding. I am not tall but I wanted my seats to have at least the same adjustament as original so I made it so. I have done this conversion for several of my friends also because they found the same thing I did after installing later model GT seats....luckily I had already figured out the brackets needed so reproducing them is easy. If you are comfortable with your seats like they are that is great but many will find the seats a little close to the dash even when moved back all the way and that is why I took the time to fab a solution.

Our friends at Mustangs Plus have a tech article on how to move the seat platforms back if you're over 6'. I unfortunately have never needed to do this mod

Most of the aftermarket seats on the market either come with adaptors to bolt right on your car, or are available to purchase separately.

I'm pretty sure the 69 high back buckets, a popular choice, bolt right in!

The 69/70 high back seats do bolt right in. I have a set in the shed. I should probably sell those since I will not be using them...anyone know what the current rate is for these seats?

I have 2001 Mustang seats in my car. The seat base of the 01's are much flatter (lower) than the 87 seats I had in there before. The mounting base of the 01's is not flat (and different on drivers/passenger seat) so install was a little tricky. I'm 6'1 and even with my helmet on my melon doesn't hit the headliner.

I got 2001 Mustang seats in my 65 too....mine are from a Bullitt though.

Man, those Bullitt seats look right at home, is that the original ribbed cover on it? Looks very retro. Where the heck did you find a trashed and wrecked Bullitt to strip though? Or do yo just know some friends that have some friends that rob some people?

Personally, I have always set my mind to the fact that when I finally convince myself that it is OK to mod my car past period correct options, I plan to get some of those great mid 80's Fiero seats. They fit like a glove and have that much needed (at least in a vert) speaker set into the headrest.

I found on em ebay but the guy was somewhat local so we struck a deal for a nice private sale.

Seat covers on them are the stock leather ones. That's why I bought them. I plan on getting a pony interior cover for the rear seat and then it will all blend nicely...I might get something custom made out of leather for a perfect match...but that is a money issue
