Today when I got in my car (96 GT AOD) I started it and when I put it in Drive the voltage gauge dropped for a second, the rpms went really low (below 500) and the engine shut down. Now it doesn't shut down all the time but it does almost shut down until I give it some gas. If I give it a lil gas before I put it in drive it won't do it. Can someone give me some insight before I go nuts. This just started this morning.

Actually sounds like a bad battery to me. My winter beater did the same thing until I changed the battery.

You might want to try cleaning or replacing your IAC valve. I guess it could be a bad battery but if your rpms drop your voltage gauge is also going to drop because your altenator is not spinning as fast. Thus not creating as much voltage. Just take your car to Autozone and have them check your battery for free. If it checks out good then it will probably be the IAC valve.

Yes the IAC valve is very easy to replace. It is a round silver solenoid that is attached by two bolts. It is bolted to the front of the upper intake(elbow) and has a black hose that hooks on the front of it.(if you do a search for IAC I am sure you will find a picture of it somewhere.) You might want to try taking that off and cleaning the inside out with some carb cleaner. But as others have said, you might want to get your battery checked first. Because if your battery is pulling a lot of charge from the altenator it could slow your idle down a little.

If your car still has the original battery in it then You might want to go ahead and replace it regardless, Because with it being 7-8 years old it is only a matter of time before it craps out on you.
