One last thought, then I'm out of ideas: try to hook up an oil pressure gauge in place of the sending unit and see if the pressure jumps or does anything funky at higher rpm's (our stock gauges are basically an on/off thing, they only tell you if there's any pressure there at all)
I just solved a problem similar to that when I put the new engine in. Seems that I forgot to put in a plug in the stock oil dipstick hole in the block and oil was spurting out onto my #2 header pipe under high revs. Check your dipstick connection at the block. See my rant here.
I have a lift and have been going through it with a fine tooth comb, I cant see any signs of oil anywhere?????? checked rear main, valve covers, pcv system, intake trak, breathers, oil pan, head gaskets, dip stick, and the oil cap; nothing all dry???? The car is running extremely rich, but would not send smoke through the vents??? Now I have a battery light on again??? CRAP!!!!!!!! the engine is comming out.....
Shot in the dark here, but I was thinking what if something was leaking onto your belt (oil or antifreeze) just a little bit, and caused your belt to slip at higher rpm's, and causing the belt to smoke? I know a burning belt has a destinctive smell, but if oil was leaking onto it, maybe That might explain the battery light issue as well...
My belt is cracked but still wouldnt explain the major hesitation when this happens. I'm now thinking its electrical, the car makes no funky noises, just hesitates and then smokes. So if and when it hesitates i'm getting blow by which explains the smoke, and would also explain the rich condition, would or could this happen with a faulty alternator? I wouldnt think it would'nt considering my battery is good.
if the hesitation is due to lack of spark, then there would clearly be lots of unburned gas in the exhaust, hence black smoke ...
but how would no spark be a cause for blow by?
also, i don't see a connection between that and these 2 things: (1) why it looks and smells like oil, (2) the smoke in the cockpit.
might your clutch be burning up?
is it a huge cloud of smoke?
how about this: blowby with an exhaust leak? the blowby kils the spark and causes the hesitation and the smoke, the exhaust leak lets some of the smoke into the cockpit
And I do have an exhaust leak..... hmmm good thought i'll look into that next. Back to the original the blow by is there and since the gas is not igniting until the next stroke it would be rich and burn an excess amount of oil left over.... I dont know trying to figure out something....
when i replaced my engine a couple years ago i also did my injectors and shortly after my car was running really rich, looked like freakin spy hunter! anyways i think maybe one of my injectors was stuck open or something because i took the upper intake off to inspect and when i put it back together it ran fine. i looked at the fuel rails and the wiring harness when it was off and i didnt notice anything unusual but i do remember twisting the injectors a little just in case and making sure that everything was its right place. i also had a rear main seal leak one time that caused my car to smoke and it also came through the vents a little- but it wasnt spy hunter
Well the alternator is toast, which would explain the hesitation, My mechanic thinks the smell was the rich condition from low spark, as for it comming in through the vents theres any exhaust leak on the passenger side right at the heads and header mounting point, Which would explain the smoke. It getting torn down as we speak, I'm putting the new cam in and the reworked afr's plus adding the RPMII intake, I will be getting rid of the stock heads, rockers, pushrods, and an aftermarket cam (not sure which one). Anyway hopefully this will take care of all the crap.
I'd be real willing to be it's your rear main seal!
Trust me, I've had this happen.
It's probably only leaking at high RPMs, when the force of the spinning crank is forcing oil out of it HARD. Said oil is then hitting your exhaust and making a smoke show.
Try this: Park the car on a white sheet. Rev it in neutral to 5-6K a few times. Move the car and check for oil.
BTW- Why would a bad alternator cause hesistation? I know a few guys who take their accessory belts off at the track and basically run with NO alternator...
