Just bought my kid his first car... 84 5.0 5 speed. Car sat for 9 years. Put a battery in it and it ran great. After it ran for a while it would not start. Alternator is putting out 14 volts at peak, replaced dura spark module, voltage reg... starter will satrt breifly but quits after a few ...like a dead battery but the bat. still shows 11.4 volts. Took the starter down and they said it was fine but dont know what they were testing. When car is running it starts to cut out under 1500 rpms....any ideas..any help would be appreciated greatly.

it could be lots of things. i'd check all the grounds (battery cable an engine to chassis). take the carb off an clean it. it may need a rebuild if cleaning the gunk out doesn't cure your problem. the gaskets an stuff may have dry rotted.

Motor gasoline does not have good long term storage characteristics. It will deteriorate and create gum and varnish. It will also lose the volatility needed to make it burn correctly.

If the car sat for a prolonged time and wasn't driven, gum, moisture and sediment in the fuel system will cause problems. You will need to drain and flush the tank, and fuel lines, Then replace the fuel filter. The carb may have to be disassembled and rebuilt to get the varnish and sediment out of it.
