Here's my idea

Ok so I don't whore up ga289stocker's thread I figured I would start my own. Now I was wondering how hard it would be to make that ram air box work with a NASA hood. http://www.ramairbox.com/ I see some of you guys have used an air cleaner and seal to make a base for the original style ram air with plenum. Now I don't have the plenum or fancy stuff (yes I know it's been reproduced) so I had a different idea. What I want to do is make tubes that come off the air cleaner and go to the scoops. I'm assuming I would have to make custom inlets that match the shape of the scoops and something other than a flex pipe would have to be used. Someone also suggested using an 80s GT dual snorkle air cleaner instead of the ram air box. What years used those air cleaners? Is there any way I could make this work or should I just start saving my pennies for the original style ram air? Thanks guys.

Ya I'm aware of that but the hard part will be shipping to Canada. So I figure if I can build something with junkyard parts that might do for now until our Canadian suppliers get the parts too.

The 85 Mustang GT had the dual snorkel air cleaner; earlier years may have had it, but 85 for sure.

I have one off an 85 GT and the snorkels hit on my valve covers, the snorkels angle down too much, so it is a no go for me. Taller intake and/or shorter valve covers would work. I made one by adding a snorkel from a second air cleaner. I used one from an old station wagon which has a bigger filter than the 80's GTs. From what I have read ram air does not do much under 100mph. Most of the gains are from lower air temps and not pressure.

while that is true i have read that every 20 degree drop in intake air temp is worth something like 10hp. so while the effect of "ram" air may be minimal the cooler air is worth a lot.

I think 11* cooler air is worth 1% HP is the general rule.

The HP increase from going with a ram air set up is not going to be drastic.(anything less then 10 hp is basically cannot be felt) I would go for it to have an awsome and unique set up.

Thanks for all the info guys. Ya I doubt if it will give any extra power, I just think it would be a neat experiment. One buddy of mine picked up a tenth in his fox body with something similar, but nothing says it was from that "mod." I'm always up for a project so this will give me something to do over the winter months. In the end if it doesn't do much I can always scrap it and not be out tons of money.

Since you are modding, you don't have to get the air from the hood. You could put scoops under the valence. You could modify the valence with additional holes. You could relocate the turn signals or parking lights and use those holes. You could put scoops behaind the grill. I am thinking of doing something similar with my '01 Dodge Ram. But I am going to use the fog lamp housings as my scoops since mine doesn't have fog lamps.

Well I was thinking about having the scoops behind the grill instead. The only part I couldn't figure out is how I would get the tubes through the rad support. I don't want to cut the car up at all so I figured using the scoops in the hood would be the best bet. Next weekend I'll take a look at the car to see what I can do. Thanks for the suggestions though.
