since i bought my car its had the hesitation prob....but it just started to backfire, only when im punching it and shift to the next gear.....now for the hesitation at WOT from idle to about 4k rpm it does fine but between 4k and 5k it just hesitates like it doesnt want to pick up anymore the needle moves up and down...and the hesitation also occurs when im at normal speeds cruising but its just like a sputter and not as bad as at WOT any suggestions?........i replaced plugs, wires, cap, fuel filter.....i did mess with the distributor...it was too advance and the car was pinging....i also replaced the sensor pressed onto the distibutor i gues the PIP???..the car would turn off at any given moment , and i would have to let it sit for about 15 min before it would start up again....help!!!

For no code scenarios, see here. Not being able to see codes is a red flag in and of itself. The system spitting a system pass code is a means of ensuring that the codes were dumped properly.

Good luck.

You said you pulled out timeing before you cleaned the MAF because it was pinging. A dirty MAF will cause the engine to ping and retarded timing will cause a hesitation. Now that you cleaned the MAF I would bump the timing up to 12* and see if it fixes the hesitation without pinging.
