Hesitation problem

Today me and wife went for a ride around the town. Just cleaned the stang up and gave it a new coat of wax. Thought I was doing pretty good. Guess I removed too much of the good dirt though. It hesitates at any throttle position and any rpm above idle. I checked the mass air meter and it appeared clean, not even sure if that would cause this though, just something to look at in a parking lot more or less... It also back fires a bit, so I would suspect timing... Anyone got a direction to point me in? I have a chip in it but it's never given me problems before. Could it be my O2 sensors? They've never been replaced as far as I can tell... Any help would be great.

Check for codes. Check gap on plugs or just replace. Check timing.

I hope it something that simple. I just rebuilt this thing a few months back, I really don't want to go tearing into it again, and I don't have access to a garage anymore... but plugs are doable..
any other idea's?
