Hey fellas, some Turbo questions.

It's been a while since I have posted in this forum. You may remember I purchased a ProCharger kit awhile back but have yet to install it. Had some other business to take care of.

Anyway, the short and skinny of it, is I can get my money back for the kit. The guy I got it from wants to set me up with a turbo kit. I believe turbo is the way to go without a doubt but the question is, I don't have hands on experience with them. I want an intercooler with it, and with a little more cost, he can hook me up with a twin turbo system. He tells me that there is really no advantage of this other then spooling the turbos up quicker then a bigger single turbo. He says he has a way to make the larger single turbo spool up just as fast.

I am sure I am showing my lack of experience, but that is the point. How much better is stainless then coated mild steel? How do our cars react to turbos with little or no mods? First I should say, the car is pretty much stock besides underdrives, tranny, driveshaft, clutch and bellhousing. When I finish getting things in order around here, I plan on this being more of a strip car but still being able to drive it out of state on a rare occasion. I hear turbo cars have the ability to be a daily driver and a weekend warrior at the local strip.

I will be doing everything from heads/cam to maybe even a 331 stroker in the future, however atm the car is 99% stock. I don't want to buy a turbo/turbos twice if I don't have to. Is there anything I should be sure to ask or do when I go to talk to him about this tomorrow?

Thanks in advance
Adrenalin

i wouldn't get a turbo they make too much power and will make your car way to fast just keep it stock . :rlaugh: if i had it to do over again there would be a nice big turbo on my car just make you mind up on your combo before you buy anything that way you won't have to buy things twice .

I would defintaly go turbo!

Dont worry, you will have the capability to make more then enough power to distroy your bone stock motor, with the properly setup turbo system.

Its your choice on single or twin.. Both can make equal power, spool time, and efficiency, if sized correctly.

Stainless vs, Mild steel..
Stainless is sure pretty, but also has a high expansion rate, verses mild steel.. So if stainless is used, you also want to utilize a flex coupler on the cross over.
if mild steel is used, be sure to coat it.
Stainless is more costly then mild steel, but usually does not need coating as mild steel does.
On my setup, i have bbk headers ( mild steel) mild steel downpipe, and a stainless cross over.
if i were to do it agian, ide do it all in Stainless, since it doesnt need coating, looks so NICE, and holds up to rust and whatnot.

Dont see why a turbo car cant be a daily driver, weekend worrior.. Mine has no problem fitting the bill!

Thanks for the info thus far guys! And I have been checking out a few threads on that site. I am sold on the turbo, no worries there, just not sure what the downsides are and what to be leary(sp) of. I was told mild steel will crack after a little while and that was the reason for stainless. I am not about making it pretty but usefull is my goal. I use to have a '90 coupe that ran 11.4s on a 150 dry shot and this '95 needs alot of help! :p

I will be packing the S/Cer up here in a bit to take it to him tomorrow and hope to have all the info I need as well as getting the pricing worked out. My goal is 10s when the car is complete. How low or high I am sure will change the more I get into it. I just want to know what all I should confront him with when talking about this tomorrow.

Thanks again,
Adrenalin

Well, I went by and talked to the guy about the turbo setup and think (only for the "bling bling" effect) I will be going twin turbo. He mentioned we would probably be using two Airworks turbos around 46-50mm. It's going to cost me abit more then I expected but I guess the stuff ain't free :( . So I just threw an add in the paper for the ProCharger kit to help speed along the process.

He still wanted to push me toward stainless but agreed to settle for mild steel piping for now. He is figuring on using an SDS system and going to use 50lb inj. (sound crazy big to me but he is the one putting it together) I thought 42s sounded big but he is setting me up for when I get my shortblock built I suppose. We will also be using an intercooler as well. I can't remember what he called it but we will be converting the car to read MAP instead of MAF. (remember I know little of turbos and what is required so this may not make alot of sense)

lol, speed density doesnt use a MAF..

The guy doing your motor/turbo build sounds like he knows what hes doing, and all the parts/info sounds right on.

I wouldnt worry too much on the stainless.. Its not nessesary by any means, but does look nicer. Just make sure you get the mild steel coated.

Hey Oink, first off don't be trying to tell me how to race. You can have no clue about racing there buddy!

I checked out your website and by the looks of your pics you cannot drive your car around! That is a show car! :hail2:

I mean you shouldn't! that thing is too damned pretty!

Nice job man for real! and seriously, how can you stand to race that thing and possibly get it dirty? :p

:nice: :hail2:

lol, when did i mention anything about racing?

Ya, the car looks alright, but that doesnt stop me from pursuing my 10 second slip.
Hell, i just made it alittle harder on myself, but installing as full stereo system. Racing only gets the rear bumper dirty, under the hood stays as clean as always, since i try not too drive it in the rain.
