hey guys, is this bad??

Ive had the heads off my engine for the past month or so, and im noticing that on the cylinder walls there appears to be rust developing.. Im not sure if its deff rust, but it looks like it. On the other hand i can rub it off for the most part.. Im just wondering what the hell this is, and if there is something i should do to prevent it from happening ? I can get some pics up tomorrow of it if need be. It will be another 10-15 days before my new heads get here so it will be sitting as is until then.

If the cylinders are clean, then rust will form... No big deal.. just clean it up with WD40, then either spray the bore down with some more... or take a lint free clean rag, and coat it with oil...

That happend to me while I had the heads off for a few months. I sprayed WD40 on a rag to clean. Then just used clean engine oil to coat (used a rag).

Sorry to whore your thread man, but i'm curious, how long can you leave a shortblock sitting while you build it?

Ethereal: I think your best bet would be to get one of those engine sleeping bags from Summit.

Yup, it doesn't take the bores long at all to rust up, once you pull the heads....anywhere theres moisture, like sitting in the garage, she's gonna rust, especially this time of year...
Like they said keep em lubed up with WD..
