get some GT-40p heads off of an explorer with an explorer intake, a decent cam...and a 200 shot...you'll see 12's.

That's funny, I would hope anyone with a 200 shot could see 12's.... followed by smoke (Kaboom!) I don't think the hypereutectic pistons would like that too much!

Good luck getting that auto to run decent times, don't be discouraged to find that as you are right now, you are definitely looking at 15.2-15.5, possibly slower. Look at my signature to see what 4.10's did for my 1/8 mile time, by far the best bang for the buck. You're best bet for 12's with an auto is probably going to be a power adder of some kind on your stock 302. H/C/I route probably won't get you into the 12's unless you get a stall converter and a shift kit as well.

First and foremost that tranny is going to need a lot of attention. It is possible to run in the 12's with an AODE, heck onebad95 did it on here with an AODE CONVERTIBLE with AFR heads, an edelbrock intake, and an FTI cam. He has addressed the problems with the AODE though too. The tranny will make or break you in this situation, and a converter and shift kit may not be enough. Look to places like Art Carr, lentech, etc for completely new AODE's WITH a converter. A poweradder on a WELL BUILT AODE should put you into the 12's with a little practice and the right selection of parts.

If you are looking to get in the 12's fast just put a kenne bell flowzilla blower and and lentech trans with 3200 stall and you should be close to running 12's my dad done that and and some pistons and ran a 12.54 and a 109mph

Agree and disagree with above.. Overall, the above statement is is 100% accurate in terms of what the AODE needs.

What I dont personally agree with is how much you need to do up front. With an AODE, you NEED to get a converter, shif kit and cooler for sure. The other parts or the tranny I think Can wait...The first 3 (mainly converter) are needed for the times/hp. The other components are needed to support the HP..

My view is You "may" be able to get away without strengthening it, but if youre (I'm) wrong, you can do the work is something happens. As long as you prepared yourself for "having to do the work" I would do the first 3 things on the tranny (Hell, youll feel a difference just from that ) then do you HP mods, Then do the tranny supporting mods if needed.

Good Luck

do aftermarket auto transmissions just bolt in or are modifications necessary?

Well, if it is a direct replacement, then theoretically, you just swap out the entire Tranny.. A local shop here actually prefers to remove your tranny, rebuild and, and reinstall...The owner says he has better luck with that than actually "inserting" a brand new tranny. The Rebuild parts, input shaft, etc run about $700. The Converter is $500-$800 for a good one, and the cooler and shift kit are about $150 for both. It's about $500 or so for labor, so youre looking at just under $2500 for a solid Tranny. Ive had my Blower for 2+ years now (although Ive never raced it at the track) and have had no probs with my current tranny, pushing about 350+ to the wheels.

why do they prefer to rebuild instead of putting a brand new one in? I wanted a shift kit but they all want 450$ to install it, I was thinking of just saving that and putting toward a good auto transmission that can handle more power or converting to a manual but I'd want a manual that was stronger than t-5

How much would a shop charge (basically how many hours does it take) to install a manual in my auto if i brought all the parts?

Dont know the price of the swap

Obviously the labor charge goes WAY down if you do all the parts swap at once.

As far as using the same tranny, they test everything before they release the car, and they said they occassionally have a tranny being "finicky" with the electronics.. Hard to explain, but kinda like the hand has been with a glove for 10 years, and you put a different glove on, and it's not quite the same. It can be done, dont get me wrong, it's just that one shops personal preference

Rob, I think you are having better luck than most with your AODE. I used to own an AODE car and with less than 18000miles I had to have it overhauled and the car was all stock then too. I drove it hard, but I didn't do anything crazy with it either. I have seen SO MANY AODE failures on here and elsewhere on the net that I have grown to just cringe when I hear of them being raced because it seems IMO that they just can't take it.

I don't know of the shop you are talking about but I will add this, typically a shop will make more PROFIT on you by buying each individual part and marking them up, and adding install to the bill than just buying a tranny already assembled and installing it. Its easier to "pad" each little part with a small amount of margin built in than to make it all up on just one complete unit. Also, I'm fairly positive that Art Carr or lentech sells their upgraded tranny WITH converter for $2000 or a hair under and install can be done by ANYONE with a set of jack stands, a jack, basic tools, and a little bit of patients.

I had a 90 LX AOD. I went with an Art Carr tranny and went from 13.30's to 12.80's with no other changes. That's a huge difference. The Auto IS the most deciding factor here.

True...I know Roger has had terrible luck with his and a few others...Also, taking care of the care, being the only owner, and not beating on it for 10 years has to have helped.

This is a shop N. of Boca, that does a lot of Moroso's cars. The reason I know that they are not padding their profits, is that the owner even said I could go ahead and buy the parts I need from Art Carr, have them shipped to his shop, and then just pay for labor. But in general, you are correct with that.

Thanks for the input.
