HID Lights for Foxes

Has anyone installed the HID conversions that are available now. How is the fit, finish and most of all drivability with the lights. Seems like the one that I have seen are fairly cheap which makes me wonder if they are a true HID system. Photos and comments are appreciated as I am looking at adding them to my 89LX.

I am wondering this too what do they look like in a fox and all that because plenty of imports have them just wondering what they look like in a fox

Here is a pic of a retrofit done in the fox headlight, forgot who it belongs to. This is the only way to go though.

Retrofits are the only way to go by putting HID projectors inside the headlight housing.

Foxes use diffuser style headlights, so if you stick an plug and play kit in the stock headlight...light will get dispersed everywhere.

The IDEAL setup is a diamond clear style lens with an HID projector inside to give you a razor sharp cutoffline. A sharp cutoff line is what gives HID's their appeal. If you just slap a kit in and light goes everywhere, it doesn't look good at all. There's much more to HID lighting than the color of the light being projected

i have non retrofited ones in my 350 and they dont look bad IMO it lights up the road more

It may light up the road more directly in front of you, but because the light is unfoocused, you will diminish your field of view and actual view distance.

well no not really, its lights up everything for a great distance its like the sun but your right retrofits def look more attractive but i dont think that not retofits are horrible looking i personally like it better but to each his own

Without projectors, you will loose a great deal of perephial. If by chance you have increased your viewing distance, that would indicate that your headlights are likely aimed wrong and are likely blinding drivers. its a slightly lifted f350 its blinds people no matter what and i get plenty of periphial lighting i can post pics if youd like, but remember im talking about a much larger f350 head light, im not against getting projectors i actually thought about buying some already setup since my head lights are ruined

I doesn’t matter how big the headlight is. That headlamp was originally designed to have the same peripheral as most any other OEM headlight assembly. Changing to a HID without the projector will result in the same hotspots and lack of peripheral as any other plug and play HID kit. If your headlights were properly working originally, the stock halogens would give you a much better field of view and viewing distance when aimed properly.

As for blinding people with the lift, your headlights simply needed to be re-adjusted for the new height. Of course, with the HID's...it's impossible, as the light is scattered everywhere without pattern.

In general, I think people see how bright HID's are (even when installed improperly) and ingnore the fact that they have lost field of view and distance. In the areas where the light is mostly directed, it's brighter than hell...and everything else seems to be ignored.

The problem i worry about with a retro fit (as in raceoholic's retrofit) How the heck can you aim the beams? don't you have to glue the projector housing to the headlight? I guess once you glue it in you would use the stock fox adjusters on the black backing plate??

I was just going to throw in an HID kit to my stock headlights (well they aren't stock, they are a projector type housing for a halogen bulb) while i realize i won't get full potential out of my lighting, i'm scared to spend all that money for it not to work out right, and i would have damaged a set of lights in the meantime

ive adjusted them and unfortunatly i get better road coverage with the lights blinding people and i totally agree with you that its because i have no projectors, but like i said i dont like the look of projectors and will leave the lights the way they are

Most people who want HID's don't want them for the ability to see. It's more of a status thing as HID lights that come on high end cars look nice.

The problem is the HID's that go into halogen housings aren't even close to the real thing. They aren't even really engineered the same way. Most of these ebay kits are poorly engineered and designed and sold to the "tuner" crowd who is all about themselves anyway. It's really almost arrogance saying "I think it looks nice so who cares if it blinds everyone" These cheapo kits are on par with fake brake rotors you stick in your wheels. You want real HID's go buy a car that comes with them stock.

Ever have someone with high beams on behind you? It's annoying with hell and you want them to turn them off. They can see the road fine, but at your expense of driving uncomfortably now. Same thing with HID's. Those who install them in their cars love them, but they prob could care less if they blind poor grandma driving down the road.

At least with retrofits, the person puts the effort into making sure the light projects properly down the road so people aren't blinded. I have no problem with these because the person spent the time to display the light as it was engineered to be displayed. A person with a plug and play kit just slaps it in and say's "the hell with it" and doesn't care who is blinded. That's what it really boils down to. Lack of respect for others on the road. I can see and that's all that matters

Well that's true to a point. Most of the bulbs are rebased bulbs. A typical HID bulb put into a standard 9004 or 9004 socket shell. If you take an Ebay bulb, it would not fit in a true OEM housing. Also the manor of which the ebay kits achieve a high beam is not how it's done in OEM.

The actual light output of the HID bulb is the same, but the bulbs and such are not really the same identical bulbs as OEM

all things aside whether you do or dont go with projectors i think that chinese ones are garbage i got mine from a maker in germany theres only as thick as a pack orbit gum and the bulbs and harness fit perfectly if someone asks nice i could search for my invoice to find the reciept
