Hid's Installation Question

The projector headlights for Mustangs don't really work too well with HID's. They are cheap and not quality peices.


The right way to run HID's is to retrofit projectors from a current HID-equipped vehicle into youe OEM housings.

Depending on which route you go, the bulb size is different. I beleive the aftermarket Mustang projectors use an H4 bulb while OEM HID projectors use a D2S bulb

Don't they go in and turn like the others.

My friend has an explorer and he got the kit i showed you, and ive seen his from closeup and far away and they look fine. not too much glare at all.

Well two reasons.

#1 is that the halogen bulb doesn't put out anywhere near as much light as a HID bulb. There is some scatter above the cutoff line on pretty much every style reflector headlight assembly out there. Since the halogen is weak, this is negligible. However the HID's light output is more intense, so while the majority of the light goes below the cutoff, the small percentage going above it is stronger.

#2 is different manufacturers set their bulbs up differently. SOme take into consideration the focal point of the OEM bulb and mactch the HID bulb to this point to keep the light pattern near the same. Other kits don't care and the bulb isn't focused the same way.

Virtually ALL manufacturers of OEM HID systems in cars have gone to a HID projector setup. There are relatively few reflector style setups on the market still. Those that do exist have measure to reduce the glare above the cutoff that a normal halogen reflector doesn't have. Even still, a lot of EARLY reflector style HID setups do glare. They passed the tests to be DOT-legal, but modern systems with projectors are far more advanced.

I've seen setups where a car can be 100 feet from a wall and still create a razor sharp cut-off beam. That's a proper HID setup. Every single setup i've seen where someone tosses a kit into their car's OEM headlight has created glare. I have friends who swear it doesn't but i guess my standards are higher because when we drive down streets i can see the bottom of trees being dimly lit as we drive.

Also about having them go into the housign and turning to lock them in, do they do that or no?

And another question, waht do you mean by cut-off line?

Honestly i don't know what plug-and-play kits are good. There are brands like Hella and Bosch that are good ballasts to use, but most kits use cheap no-name brand ballasts. You could buy some OEM HID ballasts and then buy adapters to buy the rebased bulbs off ebay and use them.

Yes, the bulb goes into the housing and locks in provided you buy a 9004 bulb kit. The bottom looks like the average 9004 bulb, but with an HID glass bulb.
