high idle problem

My 00 idles high and sloooowly comes down to 800rpm if you wait long enough (10-15 seconds). This is real annoying and sounds awful. I cant rap the throttle and when you pull up to a light, it just hangs around 1200 rpm mark, then gradualy makes its way down to 800, unless the a/c compressor kicks in, then it holds at the 1200 range. I have a friend with a 97 gt with the same problem. any ideas ?

Try tapping the IAC valve with a metal wrench. This is usually caused by the IAC sticking. Tapping it will often knock it loose and solve the problem. DO NOT take the advice in the post provided by the previous poster. Those post will tell you to place a restriction in the path of the IAC. If you are already having idle problems, that only stands to complicate them. If you have no idle problems then the restriction works ok to help speed up the dashpot rate.

make sure your PCV(rubber O-ring where PCV is connected to) is not leaking vacuum.

You should clean your IAC but this is only a temporary fix. If you idle does improve then you know you need to buy a new IAC valve. You can use Carb cleaner to do this.
