Question: I want to gain a few more horsepower and I want to get a Vortech S-trim supercharger. I have heard numerous different things about the mileage on the motor and was wondering what others think. I have about 140000 miles on the motor and many people have told me that I shouldnt put on on that late. On the other hand the same amount of people have told me that with that little boost 6-9lbs that it won't matter.

What's the general concensus?

general concensus....the worst you can do is blow a head gasket, burn a piston, etc. its a gamble. it may work awesome or may show a problem. i say go for it. you wont know until you try. do it. do it.

With that little boost, I should'nt need to change the fuel delivery system will I? I want to avoid that. Too little fundage for lots of mods.

IMO, you if cant afford supporting mods.. you can't afford a supercharger. If you can't afford to have your engine broken.. you can't afford a supercharger.

I know that sounds harsh, but it IS the truth.

Now, you COULD possibly get away with a sc-trim and 6lbs of boost with just a fuel pump upgrade and FMU.. that is the set-up I am using currently.. I have had no problems thus far but my car is very well taken care of.

I wouldnt try upgrading the boost past there without the proper supporting mods though. Its up to you.. if your are willing to risk it.

I put mine on w/ about the same mileage. Ran 10PSI w/o any problems. 3 years now. The engine was very sond to begin w/ w/o and oil burning.

Go for it!!

Fuel pump shouldnt be too bad. I still have to decide if I want to do it. I just want to be able to do it right without getting to pricey. Thanks for the input guys.

By the way...does anybody know of any relatively inexpensive places to get a SC-trim? Like to find the cheapest place possible and still get everything I need.

Be prepared, if the top of the engine doesn't have fresh gaskets you may land up blowing oil out of every oriface.

Do the H/C/I first. This way the top end of your engine is rebuilt, it will be as fast or faster, and cost a similar amount by the time it's done.

Done right, the H/C/I intake, will likely never blow a Head Gasket. With a supercharger there is always that chance.

I appreciate it. I was planning on swapping out the heads and cam too. Its like an either/or thing. That kind of work is just way more in-depth than anything I have done myself. I can handle all of the periferal stuff like the intake, ignition and the exhaust. When you talk about getting down into the motor like that...I'm way to inexperienced.

GT 40 heads and E303 cam sound right? I know I will have to get new roller rockers too...thinking of getting a set of Ford Racing 93 Cobra rockers. That may be the way I will go instead of the blower. I figure less stress on the motor.

Thanks for the help...need all I can get.

your best bet is to use the money for the blower on a nice longblock 306 or 331 with a set of good heads cam and intake....then you will have the foundation for a blower...just save more cash after the motor till u can get the blower and do it right....also get a 255 in tank pump, and use the vortech inline pump as well they supply

I wouldnt reccomend putting H/C/I on a high mileage motor. If the short block lets go there goes your high dollar heads, cam, and all associated hardware. Bit if you dont care about the current motor. Add a supercharger and build another motor to install later...

Na, if you keep an eye on the oil pressure, you'll know when it's time for the shortblocks career to end. Besides a supercharger puts more stress on the front bearings, and that certainly doesn't help a high milage engine.

Tackleberry, why don't you start with a new autometer full sweep oil pressure gauge. See where the oil pressure runs now at hot idle, should cost you around $50 and then a few more bucks for something to mount it in.

Sounds like a good plan. If the block is going bad, what will the pressure be around? Remember...Im a novice. What would be the safe range?

I just installed a powerdyne bd11a on my car and it has 144,000 miles on it and i haven't had any problems yet. At 6 psi it ran a 13.45 at 112 mph on the g-tech (soft launch to prevent wheelspsin) Just buy some good gauges and keeps an eye on them.

Anything under 20psi at hot idle and i'd start to worry. It will steadily decline from there.
Unmodified you could still drive it that way for another 50,000 miles. But if you pack another 100rwhp on, and you can cut that into a quarter.

When doing the new motor thing...what is the best way to go. Im pretty inexperienced, so rebuilding a motor might be a bit much for me. On the other hand, I dont want to spend $4,000 at CHP for a crate motor. I want to be able to do it right, but relatively inexpensive. I'd like to be able to do it for around $2,000-2,500. Is that a realistic expectation or am I living in dreamland?

Thanks

Before a blower, do a compression test. This will tell you what direction to go: i.e. rebuild or blower.

The ford motosport hypertectic 347 sells for around $2200, and i've seen it go 11.0 NA in a street car.
