I have an electric fuel pump and somewhat forced myself to use one since I didnt install an eccentric on the cam. Now that the engine is in, I obviously need some fuel before starting it. I have two questions:

1.) I know its best to mount it low and close to the tank, but would it be a disaster to mount it in the engine bay on a frame rail?

2.) If so, how did you wire it back by the tank? Where did you tap in for key on/engine running power to the pump?

I have seen a blue up front, and it will work. BUT, it is wrong as you know. Those pumps are pushers and have to be gravity feed. problem is, if you don't have enough gas to push the gas all the way to the front of the motor, it starves. Which is the problem this guy had. Once hit hit alittle under half a tank, you could forget about WOT.
The wiring. Just use a relay. You can tap the back of the ignition for that. It won't hold much, but relays don't take much to turn on.

I already have a 40A relay and 12ga wires plus inline fuses for the wiring. I'm just thinking it would be a pain to wire and mount the pump at the back when in theory(key word here) it shouldnt be pulling on the fuel hard enough to break vapor pressure if it was up front. I very likely will put it out back; I was just hoping for an easy way out.

You do not want the electric fuel pump in the engine bay.
It would function under conservative operation, but would starve the power plant under heavy accleration.

I cooked two fuel pumps before I got mine low enought to work. One was even in the back, but still not low enough. It won't be a question of if it will fail but When. And Murphy will certainly rear his ugly head at the most inappropriate time.

Alright, I made a bracket to mount it close to and level with the bottom of the tank. I'm still curious though, where is the best place to tap into power for the relay? Its a PITA routing wires from one end of the car to another.

Dpends on where your battery is. But one wire is going to have to go all the way back regardless. You can just ground the pump to the chassis right by the pump.
