Holley VS Edlebrock. 750cfm on street engine.

Holley VS Edlebrock. 750cfm on street engine.

The 427 Ford Racing crate that I have been looking at was tested with a 750 cfm carb to produce its 535hp. My qustiong is on a mostly street car (with limited drag runs and 150hp NOS) what carb will suit me best? Holley or Edlebrock?

Edlebrock carbs do not belong on a performamce motor.

Seems like you don't have much experience around hot rods and you are asking a bunch of strangers for opinions. (suspensions, rear ends, efi vs carb, etc) Be careful. You may be getting bad advice as well as good. Try to find someone local that you can trust to teach you some of this stuff. If you want to take it to the track, then go to the track and talk to people.

Personally if I were building a 427W I'd use different heads/cam and wouldn't spray it. The Ford Z head wouln't be on my short list and I'd definetly use a solid roller cam. I went for a ride in a 65 FB with a 427W a couple of weeks ago and it was impressive. But the entire car was built! EFI, 6 spd, custom suspension. Not cobbled together.

I agree. And the 750 cfm Edelbrock just doesn't work on Fords. Chevy guys love it, especailly the #1411.

Every time someone swaps from a Edelbrock to a Holley, they all say the same ting: "It feels like a completly different car!"

You can make a fair amount of power with a properly ported set of z heads. I would agree though, TFS Hiports would be what I'd run on a hot street setup.

I had no luck with my Edelbrock carb I bought years ago. Seconded the prosystems deal, again. lol

Get a shortblock, then add some Hiports that have been ported with the proper cam. 700HP on pump gas and forget about running nitrous.

I was having problems with my old 289 not running right. A friend of mine asked what carb was on it. I told him edelbrock. He was like, oh, those are easy to tune. So what you need to do, is take the car off the motor, take it over to the trash can, and drop it in. Then you go buy a holley.

I dont, dad wasnt into cars, grandpa didnt know anything about cars, small town, no performance shops, no nothing. I just love cars. I have no help, no one nearby to talk to. All I got is a trips to local shows, local drap stips, etc. Most guys run Chevys so thats no help. The only buys I know running Fords have very near stock 289 Mustangs. Im doing my best to learn how to build my car.

Contrary to what all the others have recommended as far as the engine build, you have to first ask yourself what you want the car to do. Very few 700 hp engines are anywhere near "streetable". And the cops will love you, everytime you take it on the road (unless your "kin" are populating the local PD) A 535 hp car is a handful, especially to someone who's never had one. The graveyards of east Texas are full of guys who tried this (I know, I grew up there) Just where in east texas are you ?

68 coupe - Cool. I'm not trying to pick on you. We all start out knowing squwat. What I did want to say though is
1)the the entire car must be built for that kind of hp or you will waste time and money at best or hurt someone at worst. It's amazing how quickly you will crack the body by the rear windows when you start leaning on these cars. The chassis needs stiffening and of course you need good brakes. What good is 500 hp if your headlights are intermitnent or there are any other bugs?

2) A lot of what you are asking is as subjective as asking what you should have for dinner. Many people like edlebrock carbs (just not for high hp). Typically speaking, what works for traction in the 1/4 mile, hurts traction in the corners. Everything in between is a compromise. For a street car, you will have to decide what you want/like. Everyone has a different idea for what is streetable.

Weches Tx, population 35, Houston County Tx, Population 22,000. I live on El Camino Real (now hwy 21) I work in Lufkin Tx, in Angelina county, the entire county has only 83,000 people. Im just a redneck with a dream of a beautiful car.

Before doing anything with the engine, and if you truly have a goal of planting a 500+ HP motor in there, do as S-Car-Go suggested and make sure the suspension, brakes and rearend can handle it. You're transmission (if it's an auto and not a Toploader 4 speed) will need to be upgraded too. If you're lucky and have a Toploader 4 speed, you'll also need to invest in at least a Centerforce dual friction clutch and pressure plate and new flywheel too, to handle the torque.

Im going with beefed up suspension, 9in rear end, and a TKO-600 transmission. That should handle the power I plan to put down.

That lake is south of 21 at the Cadoan Mounds park, just east of the river. One of these day's I wouldn't mind retiring somewhere in east Texas. Love those sleepy little towns.

Why is everyone talking so badly of Edelbrock carbs? Most people I talk to prefer them for street cars.

I have had good luck with Edelbrock. With Holley, its been more of a toss up or 50/50 shot.

Cause they're "Fuggly" ? Most guys I've seen with em, don't know or never took the time to tune a Holley. Set em once and leave em the hell alone. They'll stay that way for years. If you think you have a problem, 90% of the time it's the ignition causing it.

Clean slate huh ? Just make sure it'll stop and handle the corners before choosing a motor. 535 HP is PLENTY of power for public highways. Hell even building up the 289 will put a smile on your face if done right. (10-11 to 1 comp, good heads, a retro fit hydro roller cam, highrise dual plane intake, topped with a 650 Holley)

I had considered finding a 289 car to play with before diving into this car. Its going to take years to finish.
