HOLY CRAP Changed From 3.73 to 4.10's

How do you like the 4.10s vs the 3.73s for strictly daily driving and Highway?
I'm looking at both. Everyone seems to say it doesn't make that much of a difference on gas/RPM. I've searched these forums extensively, just wondering your opinion since you are n/a like me and you have actually driven both.

It's a big difference. Idling on highway can be a 3,000 rpm difference. With my 3.73s at a good highway cruise ~75mph I'm seeing 2,200 on the tach as with 4.10s you'll see ~2,400-2,500 which is a HUGE difference if you have a full exhaust.

I got 3.73s because #1. It's a DD and #2. It's going to get blown and I want traction

I just got back from a long road trip that was 99% highway with my 4.10s. I filled up with 13.2 gallons of 93 about 2 minutes after the LOW FUEL light came on. I reset the odometer, and hit the road. When the LOW FUEL light came on again, I was at 340 miles.

340 mi/ 13.2 gal = 25.75 mpg.

Now, for the first 150-175 miles I was making good time not worrying about rpms. I was doing 80 +/- 3mph @ 2800-2900 rpms. Once I got into the death happy state of Texas, I slowed down to 70mph @ 2300-2400 the rest of the way.

When I filled up again there was probably a good 20 miles or more left in the tank but I didnt want to take that chance. So I just did the math according to LF light to LF light.

Yes, 4.10s will make you spin higher rpms on the highway, but its not killing my gas mileage. Besides, we drive V8s, complaining about gas mileage is a little odd.

+1 on the gas mileage. You'll be fine. I was worried about that before I got my gears, and now I realize why everyone says to get the 4.10s.

I made the same change and yes it is amazing how much more of a difference 4.10's make. It seems like they are a bigger jump from 3.73's to 3.10's than the 3.73's were to the 3.27's.

I will never recommend 3.73's to anyone that is staying N/A again.. DD or not.

I'm familiar with "don't fear the gear" and I'm afraid that's exactly what I am doing since I only feel like doing this once. I agree, no one buys a mustang for the gas mileage, its just another thing to consider with the $ of gas right now. The fact is, basically all I drive is highway 40-45 miles round trip daily to work, CT to Jersey trips on weekends ~130, plus other distance trips.
Helty, with #'s like that on your trip, you make a good argument for the 4.10s.
It makes me think if I shift quick to 5th on routine driving as much as possible I can keep the mpg up.

Other things I consider are the loudness (not drone with my magnaflows) and the fact that I don't find myself launching from stop lights at wot all too often, nor do I go to the track.

I've seen people argue that 3.73s may be a better fit for someone like me and it seems that everyone that has them seems to be happy. mustangman9812, maybe you can shed some light or anyone else that has actually driven both.

With that said, I like having a fast car and handing those ricer fools their a** when the bone heads are screwing with me, or any of the other idiot drivers in CT. I'm mostly likely staying n/a at this point.

I know this has been widely disgussed already.

Maybe I'm just being a big pu$$y...

i had 4.10 in my 99 cobra it killed me on the highway cause i go 85/90 mph for like 18 hours at times beside fill ups and food..my 99 got 28.5 mpg when it was bone stock with 3,27s now with 3.73s i get aver 24.5 mpg. diif strokes 4 diff folks

I have a 97 Cobra which has 3:27 stock. At 70mph I was a 2000RMP. When I went to 3:73s, it jumped to ~ 2500RPM which I think is a big diff for daily driver. I'm glad I didn't go with 4:10s contrary to what everyone else says. I'd rather get the power elsewhere. I also plan on getting a blower too so 3:73s work for me.

you can get good mileage around town with the 4.10s also, bc they allow you to shift into 4th and drive at a lower rpm rather than staying in 3rd at a higher rpm (where if you should use 4th with a higher gear, 3.73 3.55s, ect. you would/could bog in 4th).

The problem is staying out of the throttle w/4.10s. They're addicting

man i got the same mileage with my 3.73's.. i also had 4.10's which i didnt really tell a difference with gas

^^^just remember, that was 99% highway driving too. Didnt stop at all until it needed to be filled again. In general, 3.73s will yeild better gas mileage than 4.10s, but theres not a huge disparity like so many people believe.

I recently got a job which requires about 25 minutes of highway driving each way, to and from work. Honestly I'd rather have a 4-cyl beater than anything, but Im not about to go switch to .73s, 3.55s etc. The difference is marginal.

Man Its a bigger change than I expected. It really pulls harder. I really thought it wasnt going to change much but it did. You guys here at :SNSign: are right 4.10's RULE!!
Sweet to hear :nice: .I'm gonna be doing the same soon.Just waiting for my 4.10's to come in.I think they will do wonders for the VT stage II cam's in my stang.
It's funny,i went to the 3.73's thinking that a blower was in my future for the stang, until i started to read posts on cams on modular depot  . :)

How are some of you getting the most ridiculous gas mileages ever? The BEST i have ever gotten is 19.4mpg in the GT and that was with mostly highway driving. I have stock gears and just changed the fuel filter. The MAF has been cleaned as well. Maybe its my exhaust leak or sticking IAC?

I debated between 3.73's, 3.90's and 4.10's for 2 months. A freind got 4.10's in his 02 GT, all it took was a 5 mile drive in his car.
I had 4.10's a week later!

I think these cars should have came from the factory with atleast 3.73's.
To be honest, I have never checked my milage. I fill up once a week and I work 15 miles away and my foot weighs 100lbs....:D

i got a 97 cobra and i juss did my 4.10 about a month ago and am really happy with em....people were telling me to go with 4.30 and 4.56....i think that would of been too much....in my opinion....im glad i didnt get the 3.73....im happy with my 4.10's.....im hitting about 3,000rpm's at about 80mpn
