Call me crazy, but my 5000 watt/10hp generator is too damn noisy. It is the old flathead design and the exhaust is very poppy and a loud harsh tone.

I was considering buying a honda civic muffler or making my own. I can weld, but I am no fabricator. Does anyone have any constructive thoughts or info? I have been searching the web and found a tad bit of info.

Does anyone also know what the pipe size of a civic/ metro, etc muffler is? I have a fair amount of space to work with so I may actually get a car muffler under there!

I have found that these engines and alternator can make a fair amount of noise, but I am sure that I can make the whole package quieter.

Anyone intersted in a 3500 small and quiet generator, check the $299 Nikota from PEP boys. This unit is quiet! Makes some noise but not harsh at all.

not sure - what kind of exhaust or output does it have now? with adapters at a parts store, one would think you could adapt the pipe to whatever you need.

FWIW, sorta unrelated, IIRC, my bud has a modular air cleaner on his two stage air compressor (point being, i like the kind of creativity you are entertaining here).

EDIT, just saw the part about constructive thoughts. sorry. free bump though.

I went to auto zone and bought a 17 dollar thrush glasspack muffler. Then used reducers on it until it fit the nipple that came out of my gen. Shoot me a PM if you want some pics, I routed the pipe out of the back of my shop and you cant even hear it run. I can shoot a video even if you want to hear it. Also if need be, you can unscrew the nipple in 30 seconds and screw in your old muffler to take it off somewhere with you.

You could use a round universal cigar style lawn-mower muffler, the OD is about 2"? so a car muffler can be welded onto that.

The most quiet small engines are the Hondas, those things hardly make any noise.
