hood clearance w/ air-gap intake

I would like to use a rpm air-gap intake manifold in my 69 mach 1(non-shaker, scoop not cut out). It has a 351W(408 stroker) and everything is aftermarket. Can anyone tell me for sure if it will fit under the stock hood with carb and aircleaner attached(duh)? The engine isn't in the car yet so I can't measure using the clay trick. I know the air-gap is about 1-3/4" taller than the performer that was on it before. The Edelbrock techs couldn't tell me. Anybody?

That's a last resort for now (but I have thought about it)! What if I accidentally get caught in the rain?

i dont know, i have a scoop right now sitting in my room waiting to go on the car, i have posted numerous threads about rain, dirt, birds ect. getting under the hood, but no one seems to think its a big deal, they say it will be fine, plus they just told me if i have to to manufacture a plug for it. But, there might be clearence issues. I have the performer rpm intake and edelbrock card ect. and the stud on my carb hits the hood and has actually dented it under hard acceleration due to the engine flexing. So i am in the process of adding the scoop and making it funcitonal. I am not sure about the air gap, but i know it is taller than the rpm, so there might be clearence issues. Someone needs to post on here that has one.

With an Airgap or Stealth intake you will have clearance issues. I had to use a HiPo aircleaner on my 351 with a stock hood and it kinda looks silly.

NONONONO!!! Don't cut I have been asking the same question. I finally went to the mustang ranch by where i live and they said it would be fine in a 1969. He even showed me a car with it on there and it was okay. I will be getting one and will be using my stock aircleaner housing and they said it would be okay.

I think the gains from running the airgap will be negated by the aircleaner assembly that you will have to use.

A 351W sits lower in the engine compartment than a 351C I am told.
I have a 70 Mach1, which is essentially the same as far as engine compartment size.
On my 351C I run a Edelbrock Torker (single plane high rise) Intake with a 650 Hollry, and 4" K&N Air Filter, with no clearance problems.
Just a point of reference for you.

My air gap had instructions for checking clearance. Put some modeling clay on the assembled cleaner in 4 locations and on the center. Gently close the hood. See what you get before you start cutting.

I have the Edelbrock Catalog, here are the height measurements for the different intake Edelbrock manifolds. I would try to find someone who has a RPM intake installed already and see if they would be able to get another 1 inch under the hood.

Performer =4.56"
RPM = 4.80"
Air-Gap = 5.75"

Well I guess I'm just gonna try it. I guess the worse that could happen is I have to return the darned thing. Thanks for all the help everyone. Hopefully it'll be done in about a week, I'll definately post my results.

Don't worry about the rain. The scoop on my Shelby is open and I have Webber carbs with no air cleaners and have been caught in the rain many times with no ill affect. The underhood temps keep the water from becoming a huge problem. You can take a rag an wipe up what little residue there will be when you get to a stopping place but it is only minimal from my experience.
