Hood Latch Cable Replacement

Hood latch cable

Is your hood completely latched? if it's not, you are in luck, if it is you should check if the handle is broken off under your dash. If the cable is intact but the handle is broken off you can grab the end of the cable itself with a pair of vice grips or pliers and release it. If the cable is snapped in two, you will have to somehow get under the car, (properly supported) and try to go between the a/c condenser and grill and somehow snag the release on the latch with a coat hanger. Or you can try to grab the cable where it passes behind the left headlight and try to release it. I looked on my '91 and it looks like a real magilla. Sometimes you can unbolt the latch, but it looks real hard on a 'stang. Once you get it open, a replacement is as far as your dealer. I usually use masking tape and tape the end of the new cable to the end of the old cable where the handle is and guide it through the firewall and engine compartment to the latch...the new cable will follow the old one so there will be no questions on routing and you shouldn't have to remove the inner fender liner. One other thing, some cars have an excessive gap between the hood and front bumper fascia and you may be able to sneak a 1/4" ratchet extension with a short 8mm socket and unbolt the latch using the 2 access holes in the fascia. Also check for a jam-shut due to collision damage, have one guy work the cable and another try to un-jam the hood....Good Luck

Thanks for the help. There is about 2 feet of cable still connected to the latch that hangs down in the front. The cable broke at the battery and there is no cable attached to the handle (went to open hood and ended up with handle in hand). I'd like to replace the cable if possible.
