Hood pins.......

I don't think I would be making enough power to really need any but they give any mustang a sort of bad ass apeal. You know when you see those pins on the hood that there is something special down below. I was curious as to how they install. I see the little rings that are on the hood and I was wondering if those are drilled onto the hood or does the hood need to have holes cut to accomodate the pins?

You drill the holes into your hood, I recommend having a professional do it for $35-50 or so. Quick easy project for them, I tried it once myself being an amateur mechanic and screwed up the hood on my celica.

do it yourself and you become a professional.good tape mesure, masking tape, magic marker and very,very small drill bit. assuming you are going to do this on your 65. you need to setup your reference points. i used my radiator support because thats where i installed mine. open your hood and leave it as close to the rad support as you can and shine a very bright light from the side of your stang across your hood from underneath. lay two stripps of masking tape across your fender representing the position of your rad support would be if it went from fender to fender. the gap between the two strips of masking tape should be the exact width of your rad support. do this over and over again. when you feel you are as close as you can get, use your tape measure alot an reference numerous time from the front edge of your hood to the middle of the gap between the tape on you fender. figure out where you want your pins. the closer you get to your fender the more accurate you will be.measure over and over again. get some balls and drill a very small pilot hole. the smallest bit you have. driil through hood and rad support. look where your pilot hole is and measure where it needs to be to go through the middle of your rad support. drill again for position of pin. pilot holes will be covered by round chrome pieces. driill rad support, install pins lower hood and mark contact with hood. drill through hood with incremental size bits to diameter of pins. you may need to slightly tweek pins to fit trough holes in hood.(bending rad support) install round covers and you are done. each of my pins pilot holes were about 1/8 inch off but the round things covered it. hope this helps.

Totally ignore the above if you want your hoodpins installed like they are on a Shelby, which is the correct way. The hood pins REPLACE the adjustable hood bumpers in the front of the core support. Simply remove the hood bumpers and you can put the pins right in their place after you remove the threaded clip. There are several ways to go from here to get the holes in the hood correct but since the pin is in a fixed location it shouldn't be hard. You can simply put the pin as low as it will go, close the hood gently, mark the location where the pin hits the hood and make slight adjustments for where the hood will be when closed since it travels in an arc. You will figure it out. You usually have to adjust the holes towards the back of the hood to compensate for the arc.

Will have to agree with ronstang too,
If the hood pins are replacing the hood stop bumpers,
Could'nt you just use the marks that are on the hood where they strike?
Seems like the easiest way to me.

BTW....a little trick if your hood seems a little loose up front without the bumpers....using trial and error cut a piece of heater hose to slip over the pins to act like a bumper/stop on the bottom of the hood. This works great and for shows you just pop them off and throw them in the ashtray or your pocket etc. if you don't like the look.

"totally ignore the above"- ouch. i didn't realize he was building a shelby. i was just giving insight on a general idea on how i did mine. i needed to keep my bumper stops to help support my glass hood.

Sorry dude. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings but Shelby or not you just don't put the pins in the top of the core support....it is too flimsy and the pins don't go thru the hood frame then (well I guess there are some areas you could get them to). It is just not a good idea. I'm sorry to hurt you but I just didn't want him to make that mistake. Read a few posts up and I tell how to support the hood when the pins are where the bumpers used to be.
