Hood question, 351W, TFS box intake in a 95GT

I was looking to get the Cervini's 3.5" single rise cowl hood. But doing a search on here I found someone who said the TFS R box intake wouldn't fit under that hood with a 351.

Can anyone confirm this? I thought I remembered a guy on here running a TFS R intake on a 351. I'd hate to get a hood taller than 3.5".

I have a HO Fibertrends 3.5" cowl and a TFS box upper on my 393 and it fits with room to spare - dunno if the Cervini's is built the same though.

I've heard there is only 2.5" of clearance under the 3.5" Cervini hood. I've never seen one in person though.

I had a hogan sheetmetal intake under a 95 Cobra R hood and had plenty of clearance.

I KNOW it won't fit with an R hood, because that's what used to have. It wasn't even close to shutting - that's why I got what I have now. HO Fibertrends is as good or better quality compared to Cervini's anyway.

I have a 357 with a TFS 351 intake, bought a cervini 3.5" and it did'nt clear because of the inner liner on the hood, I don't know what the measurements difference is between the 351 (R) and the box, but in my case a 4" cowl did'nt clear either, had to cut the inner liner to make it fit.

Which motor mounts are you guys using? There are a few things you can do to aid hood clearance. Set the motor back an inch. Currently I have the motor in my S351 set back an inch, I have a Cobra style Upper with 1 inch spacer, stock heat extractor hood, and I have probably two inches of clearance. Like some have done you may have to cut or notch the hood structure near the cowl. When I had the R-model hood I was using a Hogan sheetmetal upper and didn't have to notch the hood at all.

i had to cut a chunk out of the rear of my 4" harwood to get the box r to fit. don't know about cervini hood either?

Shoot, I already have my Kooks custom headers and they're designed for a stock motor location. I know the vic jr will work under the Cervini's, I just like the TFS box intake and Ed Curtis recomended it for my combo.

Where are you guys cutting the hood? Have any pics?

FYI, I sent an e-mail to the TFS tech department and this is what they told me.

"Chad,
You will have plenty of trouble trying to get it under a 3.5" cowl hood.

The billet adapter/spacer can be machined down by .500" (Of course, You will need to chorten the fasteners a like amount...)"

A Cobra R has a 2.5" and it has a 351. I am confused why wouldn/t 3.5" hood work?

Completely different intake system. The Cobra R has a Cobra style long runner intake, the TFS R is a box style intake, much taller.

TFS makes several different intakes - The 'street heat', the 'track heat' and the "R-series". All are traditional style intakes with different runner lengths. I had one of those under my HO Fibertrends 1.5" "R" hood with my 393 and standard 'vert motor mounts with plenty of clearance. They also make the 'Box-R' upper as pictured in the previous post. This one does NOT fit under a 1.5" R hood, but DOES fit under my HO Fibertrends 3.5" hood with my 393 with room to spare.

Oh ok thanks for the info. Hey Don you said you have a 393 what type of block are you using. Is it the Ford Sportsman Windsor or like a Dart block?

'96 roller block. Windsor motors usually hold up really weel to lots of power. However, I may end up find that limit this season - hope not. If I do, I'll do a Dart 331...

351 blocks have alot more material than a 302 block. I've heard everything from them handling 550-700hp. RPMs are another issue because of the 3" mains.

Ok if I want to put a 351 in 95GT can I still have AC and power steering? Also what is the difference between a Dart Sportsman Iron 4 Bolt Block and a Iron Eagle Dart Block?

Dont cut the hood. You can machine the intake. I had to do this one my setup and almost have enough off for it to fit under my 2.5" stormin norman hood. I am finally breaking down and getting lower motor mounts.
