Horn going off in 88 Mustang GT Convertible??

I had my car parked in my garage and my horn was going off as if there was an alarm on it. I have had it for over a year, and to my knowledge, there is no alarm on it. I tried disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it several times and it continues to go off every time. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance.

So the horn honks on and off, or it just wails non-stop?

If the latter, the hornpad can be problematic. You can just pull the cover and disconnect one of the wires that attach to it (to shut it up). Of course, this is a temporary fix and the car should not be driven without a functional horn. It does give one time to do continuity testing in the hornpad however.

Otherwise, you'll have to start looking for an alarm input into your horn circuit. Normally it would be be on the control side of the relay.

i had the same problem with one of my cars, i just pulled the horn fuse and didnt worry about it.

Like was said, if it is blaring constantly, most likely the foam padding in the horn pad is gone. After you remove it and test it, just get some thin foam to replace the flat stuff between the two copper plates that make up the horn pad. Cut a few holes for the bumps on the lower plate and put it back together. Mine did this about 4 or 5 years ago.

If you do this, be sure to get one of those bumper stickers that says "horn broken, watch for finger"

its the horn switch...very common problem in our cars... old issue is there are no companies that manufacture them...you either have to get one out of a junk yard or repair your own...the sponge material between the two metal plates wears out and you have to carefully cut it out and replace it... hope this helps

this was my problem and how I cured it in about the same time frame.

I had this happen almost 10 years ago.

I carefully pried the plates apart after observing where the foam was worn out (the low spots). I then razor-bladed a few small pieces of open cell foam I had laying around from some packing and glued it at strategic spots to separate the plates. I didn't remove all the old, just glued in a few new blocks.

Fix works great!
