My car is making this horrible clanging sound that it seems like the engine is about to fall out of the car or something. It started out not so loud but then got bad quickly. I thought the engine was going out like a piston was going through the block or something except that the noise behaves strangely and last week a guy listened to it for a couple seconds and said it was a loose torque converter.
So I dropped the starter out and checked the flywheel to converter bolts and they tightened but only like 1/4- 1/2 turn and when I started it again, same old sound. It is mostly really loud at idle and when you are going like 20-30 with the gas slightly pressed but once your speed is up around 55+ it behaves like absolutely nothing is wrong. The transmission has been shifting gears and working fine except if I'm going slow and hit a hill it will start shifting back and forth between 2nd and 3rd, its an fmx by the way.
Could it still be something with the torque converter even though it wasn't loose or? It is a higher mileage engine so I'm not really sure what to do. Thanks for any input
