How bad will gears effect my mileage?

ok but no one has answered my question yet.... how are they on the freeway racing from like a 75-85 MPH kick??? 4.10 compared to 3.73. From what I hear 4.10's get winded on the freeway from the top of 3rd gear through 5th they are useless say compared to 3.73's or 3.55's... DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY PERSONAL INPUT????

well no cause we dont do any roll racing :nono: :D, but you do have a nice acceleration even at that speed when you need it to pass someone on the highway

I've gotten has high has 27.2 mpg on the highway at speeds between 65 and 70 mph. When my car was stock I was able to get 28.2 mpg at the same above listed speeds. With the mods on my car now, it's like night and day. I get around 17 mpg in the city and sometimes it dips down to 16 mpg. There will be some compromise with that gear swap. However, it's nothing to worry about. Pearl02.

Well when my turbo setup goes on, I guess ill have to be one of those "60MPH or up roll" guys LOL. :rlaugh:

But seriously I hear that 4.10s dont pull good as good on the highway as say 3.73s....but im not sure how true that is. 3.73s are PERFECT for 65-70MPH dropps into 3rd though....pulls like a scalded ape :) . And thats kinda what im worried about now...3.73s + 440RWHP and 500RWTQ= scarey lol.

What the hell are you worried about? Your car's slow

:D

I don't drive my Mustang too much, but I will give my input anyways.

I have a 2001 Mustang GT 4r70w automatic. I have 4.30 gears in there also.

Honestly, I love how the gears really allow you to accelerate, and I wouldn't have anything else. Sure, the highway rpms are a bit high, especially whenever you get above 70mph, but still tolerable. As for gas mileage, I lost around 1 mpg in town with them (if that much), and I lost probably around 3mpg on the open highway. Know what else ? I honestly don't care about that little loss of gas mileage, for as I stipulated, I don't drive my car that terribly much, and I enjoy the extra performance and acceleration the gears give me.

As the other guys in this thread said, don't let gas mileage determine what kind of gears you chose unless if you frequently see the interstate, and open highways. Chose gears for performance, not mileage. If you want good gas mileage, sell your car, and get a focus, or some other 4 cylinder car. If you want performance, don't fear the gear. Do a search, and read all of the other 1 million threads on the Mustang boards regarding gear selections.

well cause i swapped into 4.10's in my auto and it pulls nice in overdrive with out hesitation that is what i was leaning towards when i need to pull on a slow car but i havent done any 80+mph sprints on it yet
