How can you tell if your U-Joints or tranny mounts are shot?

I get a clunking noise occasionally when my AOD shifts. Doesn't feel like the tranny is going bad, wondering if it is U joints or tranny mounts. Anyone know how to tell if either are bad?

Get under and note if there is any slop in the joints when the adjacent DS runs are turned toward and against eachother. Note rusty areas on the joints or signs of a loose cap (suggesting bad needle bearings inside the cap).

Trans mount - visual inspection and pry on it and note movement. Dont forget to check crossmember mounts too.

Others will have other/better ideas. Good luck.

Try to move the drive shaft back and forth with a quick motion and watch the u joint. If it has any loose action or wobble it is bad, there should be no play in the u joint. My experience has always been that the u joint squeaks.

In Seattle, they rusted out the needles first and would squeak. In the desert, slop comes before squeak. In fact, they turn to dust before squeaking. :D

FWIW, rear joints tend to go out about twice as often as front U-joints.

Good luck.
