How do I add bass to a 91 Vert?

I have a 91 LX Vert. I recently installed a new head unit and six speakers. They sound nice but seem to be lacking the bass I want. I chose the speakers because they sounded good at Best Buy ( maybe not the best idea) but now that they are installed in the car, Im not as happy.

The mids and highs sound great as is the volume. I was thinking that the problem may be that its a vert and that behind the interior 1/4 trim its hollow. I have tried using the foam baffles sold by crutchfield but they didnt make a difference. I am now thinking about adding a single sub but I am not sure where or how to mount it. The trunk is super small and I need to keep the back seat functional.

Is there a speaker box I could put in the truck with maybe one 8" or 10" sub. I am not looking for super bass just a little extra to make the music sound better. I am also thinking of adding a small amp to drive just the sub or the sub and the rear speakers.

I am not a stereo guy so I will need replies to be in laymans terms. Thanks for any help

Thank you. Will putting the sub in the trunk still sound good? Do you know of a sub box that will fit in the trunk of a vert closer to the back of the seat? It cant be more than about 8-10 inches of space between the trunk floor and ceiling.

But other than that, a shop can easily build a box (as can you or a friend), and drop a couple 8" woofers into it. They're shallower than 10s or 12s, so they can fit where you need them. And yes, two 8 inch subs will work very well for ya. If you're into rap and r&b then you MAY find them lacking in the sense that they won't pound so you can hear them for miles down the road, but for in the car they should sound great. Then again, unless you're looking to rattle the doors off the hinges most clueless audio people, thinking that noise = impressive.

I almost tore mine apart to replace the 12" with a couple 8"s, actually, but I had just redone my entire trunk and definitely didn't want to scrap the work and design. I just messed around with my system settings for about 40 minutes until I (finally) was able to get it sounding perfect. Now I'm much happier than before and I didn't have to get the 8s.

Thank you for the response. I was thinking the 8" route. I do listed to Rap as well as Rock and Country and I'm looking more for the tight "hit" as opposed to the long dragged out bass reverberation (if that makes sense). Dont want to rattle doors for blocks and really dont want to hear the trunk rattling. My brother in law is pretty good with the install stuff and my father in law is a wood working guru so maybe between the 3 of us we could come up with something.

MyEarsHurt: Thanks, Im not too worried about the top, There is a peice of trim in the trunk that the top folds into. As long as I keep the box within the confines of the trunk floor and the upper trim piece, the top should be an issue. I thought about the idea of doing the spare wheel well but since the wife occassionaly drives the car, I would hate to leave her stranded, and you know that the only time the tire will go flat is when she is driving then of course I have to hear about it for weeks afterwards. Im looking into the links you sent. The reason I got stuff from Best Buy was that my Brother in law works there so I got a nice discount. I have ordered from Crutchfield before. Suggestions would be great on what to get. It looks like Im going to go with either (2) 8" or (1) 10" in a box in the trunk with a single amp (dont know what wattage) that will drive only the Sub(s) so any suggestions on brands, watts, and aux equipment is appreciated but here is what I have so far. As you can see, I am not looking for an award winning hook up, just something that will sound nice. Sony head unit (50 x 4) 3.5 Rockford Fosgate speakers in the dash. 5.5 Sony Xplode speakers in the door and 5x7 (?) Sony speakers in the rear quarter trim. Nothing fancy, the speakers are all connected with your basic radio shack type wiring.
