How do i check input shaft endplay!

going to be doing a bearing retainer soon. What do i need to do to check the endplay and what are the tolerances of it? I already have a magnetic stand and dial indicator. I am guessing just move the input shaft back and forth and check the amount of movement?

The endplay is something like .002-.005.. which is almost TIGHT... Go with a set of shims that has a LITTLE bit of play, then step up to the next size, inwhich it should leave almost no to no play.

I've never checked mine, just left it tight. Never had a problem.
