I need to do it this weekend, for my Vortech install, and I want to do it right. Unless I'm missing something, the Vortech instructions say to punch a hole and tap it with the oil still in?? I can forsee that being a huge mess. Should I just take it somewhere and have someone do it for me professionally? How hard is this? Any tips or advice would be appreciated, thanks.

No you have to drain your oil.

Installation instruction #2 page 1 Drain Oil. That is the give away right there. Or for more clarification page 2 instruction "G"

Ummm.....

I disagree...

I'll agree that instruction G says to drain the oil, but above that , it goes through the process how to tap it....which infers that there was oil in there to drain.....

I am just saying instruction #2's Title is "Drain Oil", not tap oil pan...

I did this install for my Mustang a few years back when I was installing my Novi 2000. You should drain the oil when you do this..that way oil doesn't come spilling out when you tap the oil pan.

This portion of the install was one of my scarier parts (i'm not a bonafide mechanic) when I was doing the work, because i was worried about making the hole too big or messing something up and having to get a new oil pan which is not a $20 piece..but I did it successfully and have not had any leaks for the 75,000 miles over the last 5 years that i've had it supercharged. You should have had an tap that you use to punch it through..and basically just follow the instructions. Be careful not to punch the tap in too far so you don't make the hole too big for the screw you will be threading in...

Good luck..

Mike

Don't drain the oil until you tap the pan. You are tapping above the level of the oil, none is going to come out. You are putting in a return line which needs to be above the level of the oil so gravity can allow the oil to drain. The reason you leave the oil in the pan is that some shavings may end up in the pan and they can be drained out with the oil. A magnet could also be used to get an shavings.

This was the part of the install that scared me the most and it was the easiest part. Make sure you have the right size tap and a couple different size punches. Other than that, it was cake.

Thank you, that is what I was looking for. I know how to read instructions, and I know they meant for the oil to be in there. I did not know that it was above the level of the oil. It makes perfect sense now.

On another note...

Will I be able to drive my car about 10 miles on the old tune, with the vortech installed, if I baby it? I don't want to wait a week to mail my chip to vortech, and I'm getting it dyno tuned anyway, so I figured I'd take it right to the tuner after I install it. I have options to get it towed there, but I'm wondering if it will be driveable?

DOn't listen to them. Tap it with the oil in. It won't leak out and incase you put any tiny shavings in the pan, when you drain the oil, they will come out. Good luck and make sure you have the proper size punch! It's gunna be one enormous hole!! Oh and make sure you have the right size tap too! I bought the wrong one and luckily a shop about 30 min away carried one. *phew*

my paxton kit came with the punch. it is very easy, dont let it stress you out. i was really worried about it and it was the easiest part of the install! the hole id roughly the size of a dime if i remember correctly.

Exactly right... saved me typing it oo...

when i installed my novi 2000 i had the front of the car on stands so the oil was tilted away anyways, but the whole point it that you're making the hole above the oil level, that way the oil can drain back in to the pan...

Paxton provided a punch whic makes the hole (pilot) in to a funnel type afair, you then tap it, with a load.. seriously, ***** loads of tapping grease, this catches most if not all of the shavings... do it bit by bit and your done..

make sure you use an air hammer to punch the pan otherwise you'll either dent the mofo or damage the seal and it'll leak forever...

This I don't know about. I was always told you need some kind of base tune to drive the car, assuming you installed different injectors and MAF. I would give your tuner a call and see what they suggest. They may be able to give you a base tune to limp it to them so they can tune it.

I just finished my install today, so shoot me a PM or catch me on AIM if you have any questions.

I left the oil in the pain while tapping so it would catch all of the metal. After tapping the pan I ran about 5 quarts of sh1tty oil through the pan to make sure all the metal was out. Also, use RTV or silicone while tapping the hole to pick up any shavings. Hope this helps.

I dont think it will matter either way , I cant even remember if I drained mine first or not, but like most guys I would take about 3 quarts of oil to run down the supercharger drain , after you spray a little brake cleaner in there to clean it out , and then take about 2 quarts and put down thru the regular oil fill cap to make 100 percent sure its all cleaned out/ small pen magnet to stick around in the hole might collect a few shavings as well

Thats another good tip I forgot to mention, run some oil straight though as a precaution to catch any shavings that might be left.
