How Do You Drop Gas Tank????

Ok Im not that dumb, I just can't get those bolts out. I used an impact gun set on full torque and didn't do ****. And what do I need to undo from the tank before dropping it. I don't know if the fuel pump needs to be undone or what. Thanks for any replies.

Oh yeah and the reason I'm dropping is to install my summit battery relocation before I leave for 3 day vacation. (starts in like 6 hours) Anyway, While doing some body restoration and prepping for paint I hooked up the hinge to close the hatch and shut the hatch without the wires hooked up to release the hatch and my key wasn't working so I had to rip the interior apart sweating my balls off because the A/C from the house vents heat into the garage and i'm squeezed into the tiny spare tire area trying to undo the latch/hinge mechanism. So that took like an hour.

This is the first time a mod kicked my ass and sent me back in the house unfinished or without progress. Usually I get SOMETHING done. I just worked backwards all night Someone please help me with this ****ing gas tank or give me an alternative...

take the gas cap door off, there will be 4 bolts total to remove. once that is removed, you can go down and remove the bolt holding the ring to the side of the tank.

support the tank with a jack in the center. take off the two straps. there are just two bolts holding the straps in place. once those two bolts are out and the straps are down, you can start lowering the tank.

from that point, you can work the filler tube out of the tank. after that, your pretty much done. there are a few connections on the top of the tank to remove.

the fuel pump is on the right side of the tank, held in place with a lock-ring. i use a screw driver and rubber mallet to remove the ring. then you pull the fuel pump assembly out of the tank.

make sure you clean the top of the tank for loose dirt around the fuel pump so it doesnt fall in when you pull it out. hope that helps.

ok, just searched and found that PB blaster and patience is the key. But I still need to know if anything else needs to be undone. Me and my girlfriend are goin campin for the weekend and I want this damn battery outback NOW!! I hate waiting to put on new parts! By the way, proud to say it's our 2 year anniversary, and I still wanna kill'er all the time. Guess that's how it's supposed to be lol. See ya guys monday. Hopefully someone has the "GAS-TANK REMEDY" when I get back.

Thanks 88, that does help. My fuel pump is on the left side though. Well, passenger side, Im thinkin from the front of the car because that's how I'm workin on it. Does all that need to come out if I'm just drilling holes for the j-bolts for the battery box. What if I just lower it enough to drill without hitting crap and put my nuts on? (pun intended)

you wont need to pull it for that. just make sure its clear so no sparks or anything hit it. just drop the tank down and put something over it and youll be safe.

hopefully you dont have too much gas in the tank.

Nah, I've had $5 of gas in the tank for half a year now. I just start it up every now and then. Doing lot's of resto-work + modding. Cool, thanks.

I JUST finished installing my new fuel pump. All you should need to do is:

1) As mentioned above, use a jack to support the tank as you lower it.
2) Get those bolts off that hold the straps in place.
3) Remove the bolt that holds the metal ring to the tank. The ring holds the fill tube in place (kind of, P.O.S.).
4) This step depends on which side of the trunk you are drilling through. If it's the driver side, just lower the driver side of the tank down until you have enough room. Make sure you don't drill into the tank. If you are installing stuff on the passenger side of the trunk, you are probably going to need to pull the tank off of the fill tube. Just lower the driver side of the tank, and pull the tank towards the driver side to get it off the tube. All of the wires, hoses and fuel lines should have enough slack for you to do the job.

Be very careful if you have to pull the tank off of the fill tube. The f****ing seal that goes between the tank and the fill tube ripped on my car. I didn't find out until I put $30 worth of gas in it!
