I've seen other boards dilute the main forums to the point where the sub-forums (and sometimes the main forum) become almost unless. I find myself passing over sub-forums unless I'm looking for something specific. Whereas I may read a thread in the main forum even though I wasn’t looking for that info specifically.
Having only a few main forums keeps the thread views up and may attract users to a thread that would have been missed otherwise. I can also see the points made by others have made about thread derailments. Threads get derailed but having more exposure may actually lead to more helpful input and assistance than if the thread is in a sub-forum that gets few thread views.
