Took the stang to get tested last week (we get checked once every 2 years here in MD) and i failed for excess hydrocarbons; almost triple the maximum amount. The guy who tested it said the cats were likely the issue, which i thought was BS since theyre only a year old, until they started smelling like rotten eggs the other day. I have 2 months until it has to be tested again and if it doesnt pass then i have to pay a fine. I don't wanna waste money on new cats since i planned on removing them this summer anyways and putting on a different catback system. How can I pass without having to buy new cats? Does anyone know a trick or two to get her runnin extra clean for one day? (i have checked the other possible causes for failure like egr, vacuum hoses, etc. and have found everything to be in order) thanks fellas

I just keep my stock h-pipe in my shed, and when it comes time to go thru emissions, i just swap my o/r h out, and throw my stocker in. I pass with flying colors every time, and its only about 2 hours of work total.

I know a guy, thats how I pass. They don't even check for cats. Its plugged into a computer and as long as the CEL doesn't come on, I'm good to go.

thats for the obd 2 cars (96 and newer).

westchester, rockland, the 5 boroughs, nassau, and suffolk have an emissions dyno for the obd 1 cars (95 and older)

putnam county and north is a visual test only for the obd 1 cars (95 and older). we never get plugged into the computer. the 96's and up get plugged into the computer same as the other counties

That right, brain fart there! They do check for the CEL but the plug in is for the 96 and newer. I'm the one that takes my fathers vette and my buddies lightning to get inspected and they are the vehicles that get plugged in. They still don't check emissions equipment as long as the computer says everything is okay.

they are still SUPPOSED to do a visual as well. because everything can read ok from the comp, but there could still be "something" (like a cat) missing.

also, it doesnt matter if obd 1 (95 and older) has a ce light or not, because it could be non emissions related, and running a diagnostic is not part of the inspection process. i could still pass if my light was on. we do inspections at my job so my cars manage to pass everytime

some tricks i use to make my car to pass are:

Stock 4-cat h-pipe of course BUT with air pump on constant...directly connected
Isopropy alchol, one bottle of that in the tank
i raise up my idle a bit and that seems to help....because i have a cam

my car passed with flying colors, and i dont have a thermactor system at all, and with no egr! also, not a stock setup by any means.

Honestly, i bet if you swapped in some stock h-pipe you would pass.....cant you just borrow one from someone? My little brother got his 95 gt to pass with some cheapo high flow cats without much trouble.

Get some good cats. Mine where hollowed out when I bought my 93 GT Mustang. I brought it to a shop in my area that is listed on your emissions fail sheet. He told me that my cats had been hollowed out and they where not doing a thing. He put some very good cats on ,they carry a life time warranty, expensive, but they did the trick. I don't even have a smog pump! I live in Massachusetts. My 4 cylinder Toyota pickup wouldn't even pass because it had a bad cat. A new cat did the trick on that too.
Drive the car on the highway for 20-30 minutes. Get it good and warmed up. Back the timing down if your running advanced timing. Reduce your fuel pressure if you have that bumped up.

94gts - I know they are supposed to, thats part of the deal of knowing "someone". lol

I hear you on the CEL, that makes complete sense, I just recall them saying, "is the check engine light on", so they were probably busting my balls alittle as they always do. I usually hang out when the do the inspection, becuase they know that I want to be the one driving it into the garage. They're friends so they're cool with it.

I have heard uplugging an inj. or two helps .

It seems to be VERY common that the "hi-flow" aftermarket cats only last a year or so or one smog test then fail from then on.

I am glad in Sep. Missouri passed a new smog law...96+ OBDII cars only have to take smog tests. I am exempt. I still need to pass a vis. safty part, I can find someone or just "rig" up something that looks like cats on my O/R when I go longtubes and cut up my mac O/R pipe. I have my stock 4 cat pipe on as I was going to see if it would pass or not just to see...I dont care anymore and think I will swap it out soon.

I registered my car in another county. Example, I live in Loudoun, it requires emissions and I registered it in Montgomery County which doesnt. Just go to the DMV and fill out a new registration.
