How do YOU pull your engine?

I like taking out the tranny since I usually always work alone it alot easier for me...I do leave the bell housing on though just the tranny alone....

By myself i unbolt the trans cross member. I put a good floor jack between the legs of the cherry picker (engine lift) As i lift the whole engine & trans out i lower the body with the floor jack. Then to get the tail of the trans to clear the nose i lift it with my HANDS turning the whole trans/engine assembly sideways and pull the cherry picker away from the car.

Keep in mind ive also used this method to also install an engine/trans too. I don't get much help. A floor jack under the K member really helps.

With the motor supported by the lift grabbing the tail of the trans makes it very maneuverable.

My way is not too different than Chris's way. I've pulled the engine out with the tranny all three times I've pulled an engine. I was changing the tranny at the same time, so it made sense. I drop the tranny crossmember, but I set the tranny mount on a small floor jack I have. As the engine is pulled out, the floor jack rolls with the engine keeping the rear of the tranny off the ground.

I've always had enough vertical clearance to raise the cherry picker really high, so I go straight up and back. If you have a helper, one can push the tranny DOWN when raising up the engine to avoid scraping it on the tranny tunnel and engine bay. On your own, you can probably use a blanket or two to cushion the tranny. Once the oil pan has cleared the radiator support, pull forward and tilt the tranny up when clearance allows. To get enough room, I've had to lift the tranny up by hand until it clears the radiator support. Chris's method would give you more room to maneuver if you don't have the vertical room.

hmm my tranny is already unbolted from the engine. Also With it being so low I don't see having the room to do all that. I should have a helper when I yank it out so maybe I won't have too much of an issue.

OT 393 what fuel rails do you have?

i took the tranny out when i did it. just made it easier to just lift the engine straight up and out. then again, we had a special case because we used an actual crane on the back of a service truck not a hoist. We also just put it right on the engine stand from there for tear down. I had a 1/2" plate of aluminum made with bolt holes to my lower intake and an I-bolt on it so it was very very simple to pull it out.

engine and tranny.

good times..

All at once. BTW, I use a creeper or one of the kids skateboards under the tranny tailshaft. This allows it to roll forward or back easily instead of dragging along the floor.

To the people with long tubes:
Were there any problems installing the engine with the headers already on?

I've always heard to keep the headers in the car and then bolt them onto the engine once the engine is put back into the car...

nope, just make sure to unhook the steering shaft from the rack (1 bolt) and swing the shaft towards the fender out of the way.

^^^+1^^^ much easier to bolt them out of the car.

all out at once...:nice:

Amen, makes it so much easier. Most of us don't have a lift, and only prostitutes should have to work on their backs. Just yanked my engine last week with the tranny attached. Had it out in 2 hours.

For some tool advice, it really helps to have a load leveler for your hoist. You can pick one up for about $80. I also have a tranny jack I got on ebay shipped for $80. That makes life easy. You just lower the engine down once it's of the car, and strap the tranny into the tranny jack. Then seperate the engine from the transmission. Makes it so much easier when you don't have to hold that transmission up, especially when you have a Tremec 3550.

I'm a shade tree mechanic....Ive done most of my engine pulls in my backyard in blazing summer heat (builds character) With uneven ground the 1/2 Ton hole scares me. Especially after i pulled my engine out of a totalled car on dirt and warped my lift a lil. LOL I lifted the engine and used a f150 the drag the car away from the engine....Then reversed the pickup under the engine and lowered it into the bed. LOL I wouldnt recommend it that way but i was low on cash and had to strip the car ASAP.

"Do as i say not as i do."

Both at once. Remove trans crossmember, jack up transmission slightly and start lifting the engine up quite a bit, then when it tops out, I lower the transmission slowly and pull the cherry picker back, then it just pops out :)
Less of a bitch if you can take the front radiator support off though
