How do you tell gear ratio?

I believe it like this -- raise the rear of your car, rotate the rear tire one revolution - watch the driveshaft as it turns. If it turns a little over 3 times you probably have 3.23's -- turns 4 times you could have 4.10's and so on. Hope this helps.

close but not quite ;) pretty much reverse of what you just said. turn the axle one rotation, & if the tires make 4.10 rotations around, per one rotation of the driveshaft. you my friend would have 4.10 gears :nice:

Yeh man he was correct, the driveshaft would turn 4.10 times to the wheels turning once. Sorry man, just poking at ya a little. :stick:

ok I want want to get this opportunity and ask about the gear ratio thingy.. I surfed around sites and see lots of gears info then I cam across a chart like this..

1st gear - .345
2nd gear - 1.34
3rd gear - 2.11
4th gear - .433
5th gear - .923

final gear ratio - 2.340

what the hell do those mean? How do they related to the gear ratio the car has? (3.27, 4.10, etc..)

i'm not exactly sure how they do the gear ratio through the tranny. the 4.10 is the final DRIVE ratio though, which, if im not mistaken is, completely different than the final gear ratio  someone will call me on it if i'm wrong :nice:
