I went out for a ride today with a friend in my car, never has had any problems, but then again I just bought it. Blah blah parked it and went back out about 3 hours later. I reverse out of the garage and im gonna just cruise around, but in first gear it sounded really loud, like at 2k rpms it felt like 5k or something along those lines, but the car wasnt pulling at all. Same with all the gears. I could finally pick up speed, but it was hard, and it sounded wayyyyy loud. Also if i almost floored it, it would stop at around 4000 to 4500 rpm. then finally kick in (?) more and go up to about 5200 and I would shift. (I don't normally shift like this, i was just trying to see if I was only imagining my car funky). Also the car gives off a weird smell in the engine, like a burnt rubber smell? Or something along those lines. Also 5th gear is COMPLETELY gone!??! That really worries me.... It was just working fine! In 5th gear is basically NEUTRAL? I was cruisin and I thought 5th was neutral! Im pretty sure reverse works fine so far.... Havn't really backed up much at all.. Please help! Maybe if I just let it sit for a while, problems will help themselves? Psh. Heeeeelp

EDIT: About a 6 days ago I installed a K&N FIPK System if that helps at all!

Hmm thinking about it more, also If anyone knows about the k&n kit, you know the 11/16 hole your supposed to drill? Well my dad didnt have a drill bit that size so i drilled like a little more than half the size, and the IAC(?) Sensor is not fully in, but it's been driving fine without it..Could that also be a factor?

oh no no, the 88 is done for, and its not a GT its a grand am ... Its the 98 GT... There was really no sound except instead of the normal rpm sound it sounded like it was in neutral highly revved? I dunno if this makes any sense, im in a state of panic.....My dad is gonna think I don't deserve the car haha

As long as its not popping out of gear nor disallowing you to engage all gears, then I wouldn't be so worried.

I misread ur car info......:smack: LOL, that seems like really low miles for having tranny issues. maybe it is the clutch or something else does the shifter go into the gears or does it grind?

the gears all go fine, except 5th now! 5th is NOT there...I don't know much about cars if anything so I can't really explain this better . It's also REALLY hard to accelerate, and sometimes its just stuck at 4k rpm for a while! it wont go past it for a while. Also the smell gets really bad! It just stinks in the carage like burnt rubber! Heeeelp Could a clutch cause allll this?

Have you adjusted the the clutch cable yet? Pull up on the clutch pedal until you hear a click, then push the clutch pedal to the floor. This will adjust your clutch.

It also sounds like a burnt clutch. And no it will not get better by leaving it alone.

I had the same problem last year in my 96 GT and 5th gear was useless. Id somehow manage to get in 5th and about 10min later it would pop out. Turns out that lead to more problems and eventually my tranny went out and I had to put another one in. Im not saying that youre tranny is goin out but Id get it checked out just to be safe!

Thanks a lot guys. I'll probably buy a new clutch when my dad is back in town! Which is til next friday! Hopefully nothing seriously bad will happen, I just won't go driving as much . I adjusted my clutch, and it did click and I pushed it down, but I didn't take it back out for a drive, toooo scared. But this morning no smell was in the garage. I dunno I have to go to work soon, I guess that'll be the test! i wuv you guys
