86 gt vert. my fuel door actuator doesn't work. i have power to it, and there is no binding. how does it work? is it a magnetic deal? i thought maybe it was stuck, but it pulls the cable which is not attached to the actuator.

I dont know if its the same but my fuel door wasnt working on my 88 gt. I thought maybe it was the switch but I figured out it was working. Try pressing the switch a few times quickly, it worked for me. Anyways, before figuring out the switch I was looking for the manual release cable in the trunk area, when I pulled on it, it just came out from under the side panel. So, I took the side panel off and the rear panel near the hatch striker. When you open the unit behind the side panel where the fuel door is, its a pretty simple set up. Mine had a spring inside which the cable sorta hinges onto and when you press the fuel actuator it makes the cable "pop" and the fuel door opens. Look at it closely, Just before messing with that part of it pay attention to how the cables/spring is setup- its not complicated but for some reason when I reasembled it I put the spring in wrong, nothing hard to fix but it was just stupid.

Sorry, just realized that you said the cable wasnt attached to anything. The cable goes into this little black unit under the side panel near the fuel door. You just have to place the cable back in there through the srping I believe- there really isnt more than one way to do it- unless your not paying attention and put the spring in wrong somehow.

Hope this makes a little sense and helps....
